Women’s Basketball Stifles NC Wesleyan in Big Win to Open Conference Play

BC Defense Forces 28 Turnovers

ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. - The Brevard College women's basketball team (5-2, 1-0 USA South) kicked off USA South Conference play in a big way with a 74-52 road victory over NC Wesleyan (1-4, 0-1 USAS) on Tuesday evening at Everett Gymnasium.

Sophomore forward Kayden Johnson secured her first collegiate double-double with 19 points and 10 rebounds to lead the way for Brevard. Johnson was efficient from the field, going 9-of-12, and snatched eight defensive and two offensive boards. Christena Rhone poured in 14 points for BC off the bench with two 3-pointers and five rebounds, while reigning USA South Player of the Week Olivia Miller also reached double figures with 10 points and eight boards.

Brevard's defense forced NC Wesleyan into a staggering 28 turnovers, producing 18 steals. Jada Petty-Wilkins led the way with six steals, while Aleysha Hill added five as the guard combo disrupted the Battling Bishops all game. Brevard's biggest difference came off of NCW's turnovers, tuning the 28 mistakes into 36 total points. BC grabbed 16 offensive rebounds and turned them into 17 second chance points.

Brevard opened up a six-point advantage in the first period, 18-12. NC Wesleyan trimmed the deficit to just one point in the second quarter, 18-17, but Brevard controlled things from that point forward, surging towards halftime with a double-digit margin, 38-26 at the intermission.

The Tornados were in cruise control in the third quarter, leading by as many as 19 in the frame. A 19-12 margin for the Tornados in the fourth quarter closed the victory out, as Brevard secured the 74-52 win in the USA South opener.

BC will look to complete a season sweep over Bob Jones on Friday at 5:30 p.m. at the Boshamer Gymnasium.
