ATLANTA - The Brevard College men's basketball team (6-4) withstood a late rally from Oglethorpe (4-7) to earn a hard-fought 79-76 victory and sweep the season series over the Stormy Petrels on Tuesday afternoon in the final day of the Jack Berkshire Classic.
Tyler Baldwin provided a spark for the Tornados off the bench, scoring 20 points with six made 3-pointers. Twain Wilson recorded a double-double of 15 points and 10 rebounds, while Jadon Carnes added 12 points and four assists. Dre'Shaun Brown (10 points, 8 rebounds) and Brock McKnight (10 points, 7 rebounds) also reached double figures in scoring for the Tornados.
The Tornados shot 54% from the field in the contest and drilled 12 3-pointers to just six for Oglethorpe. BC registered assists on 20 of its 31 made buckets, distributing the ball well. Oglethorpe mounted a ferocious comeback late in the second half, as it shot 53% in the second stanza and scored 27 total points off BC's 17 turnovers.
Brevard led by 10 at the halftime intermission, 36-26, with Baldwin's 14 points and four made threes leading the charge. The Tornados led by 27 points, 68-41, with just over 10 minutes left to play, and led by 22 with 5:26 to go.
Oglethorpe stormed back with a monumental 21-2 scoring run over four minutes of action, capped by a Kam Stone 3-pointer that trimmed the deficit down to one possession, 77-74. With 40 seconds to play, Carnes fed the ball to a cutting Brown in the paint. Brown scored a basket off of goaltending by Oglethorpe, giving the Tornados a five-point lead late, 79-74.
Malachi Dooley scored a basket with 25 seconds left to trim the score back down to one possession, 79-76, but the Stormy Petrels were unable to hit a game-tying basket on their final possession as BC escaped with the victory.
For their efforts over the course of the two-day tournament, Carnes and Wilson were selected to the Jack Berkshire Classic All-Tournament Team.
