NC Wesleyan Rallies Past Brevard Late; Tornados the Five-Seed in the USA South Tournament

Battling Bishops Surge Towards Victory with Big Second Half

ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. - NC Wesleyan (16-9, 10-4 USA South) outscored Brevard College (12-11, 7-7 USAS) 31-12 over the final 10 minutes of action to snatch a 80-72 victory on the final day of the regular season.

With the result, NC Wesleyan secures the three-seed in the upcoming USA South Conference Men's Basketball Tournament, while BC secures the five-seed.

Junior forward Jadon Carnes scored 18 points on a flawless 7-of-7 mark from the field and a perfect 3-of-3 from behind the arc. KK Horton added 10 points on four made field goals, while Charlie Hester, Charles Reed, and Twain Wilson all posted eight points apiece. Hester and Wilson distributed a team-best three assists apiece, while Reed and Wilson each canned a pair of 3-pointers.

Khalid Chavis-Hinds catapulted the Battling Bishops rally with 29 total points on nine made field goals and 10 free throws. Chavis-Hinds also led the game with eight rebounds, six assists, and five steals, with Omari Bolden (15 points) and James Jones (12 points) notching double figures as well.

NC Wesleyan dominated the glass, out rebounding Brevard 40-24 with a 20-5 edge on the offensive end. As a result, the Battling Bishops put up 24 second-chance points. Brevard was able to outshoot NCW 53% to 43% despite its scoring woes down the stretch of the contest.

Neither side led by more than three points in a tightly-contested first half that Brevard held a two-point edge at the end, 35-33. Brevard opened the second half up with 25 points to NCW's 16 to stretch its lead out to 11 points, 60-49. The Battling Bishops, however, responded with a ferocious 23-3 scoring run that put the hosts up by nine points, completely flipping the script of the contest with just 3:11 left to play.

Carnes hit a 3-pointer to cut it to six late, 74-68, but that would prove to be as close as the Tornados could get with NCW finishing off the eight-point triumph, 80-72.

Brevard will travel to Staunton, Virginia to face four-seed Mary Baldwin in the first round of the 2025 USA South Tournament on Tuesday, February 25.
