Brevard Drops Series Finale at Averett 10-5

Tornados Back Home Next Weekend

DANVILLE, Va. - The Brevard College baseball team (0-3) fell 10-5 to Averett (3-0) on Sunday afternoon in the series finale in Danville, Virginia.

Easton King and Cale Oehler each drove in a pair of runs to lead the Brevard offense. Lucas Granata, King, and Logan Sawyer all recorded multi-hit performances in the game as well.

Jacob Thompson (0-1) took the ball to start for the Tornados in the series finale, followed up by Aaron Burchett, Gage Granata, and Cole Penland. Granata logged a pair of strikeouts in his Tornado debut, while Penland worked a scoreless frame.

Drew Skinner led the cougars with a 3-for-5 performance, totaling three RBI and two runs scored. Garrett Arner (1-0) was the pitcher of record for Averett, coming on for 3.2 innings of relief allowing just two runs with three strikeouts.

King got things going early for the Tornados with a two-out, two-RBI single that brought in Oehler and Sawyer as Brevard took the early 2-0 lead in the top of the first. The edge would not last long however as Averett answered with five-straight runs to take a 5-2 lead through three innings.

Oehler smacked his 16th career home run in the top of the fifth inning, a two-run shot, that cut the deficit down to just one run, 5-4. That would prove to be as close as the Tornados got, with Averett plating five more runs - two in the fifth and three in the seventh - to pad its lead, 10-4. Newcomb stroked an RBI single up the middle in his first collegiate at-bat in the top of the ninth, but the rally was too late as Brevard fell in the series finale 10-5.

The Tornados will search for their first win of the season next weekend as Toccoa Falls visits Gil Coan Field for a three-game series.
