Baseball Run-Rules Guilford in Saturday Home DH Split

BREVARD, N.C. - The Brevard College baseball team (2-9) run-ruled Guilford College (7-1) 11-2 to split a Saturday afternoon doubleheader at Gil Coan Field.

BC took the nine-run win in game two after a shootout in the first game of the day, which went to Guilford 14-12 after the Quakers rallied for six runs in the top of the seventh to come back and defeat the Tornados.

GAME ONE: GUILFORD 14, BREVARD 12

Game one was a seven-inning scheduled contest in which turned into a slugfest that included 26 combined hits and 23 combined hits.

BC kicked things off in the bottom of the first with four runs, as Frankie Vasquez drove in a pair with a two-RBI single. Lucas Granata followed suit with an RBI single of his own, and an error allowed Brevard to score its fourth run of the frame.

Guilford answered back quickly, putting across four in the top of the second inning to tie the contest up. Tyler Kelson, a freshman from Duluth, Georgia, launched his first collegiate homer in the bottom of the second inning with a solo shot that gave Brevard the lead back, 5-4.

Guilford took its first lead of the contest in the top of the third with two runs, but Brevard responded with a big bottom of the fourth when Cale Oehler kickstarted the rally with a sacrifice fly. Granata drove in two runs with a two-RBI single, followed up by a crucial three-RBI double by freshman infielder Logan Racine, pushing Brevard's lead up to five runs, 11-6.

Guilford started to claw back with a pair of runs in the top of the fifth, and flipped the script with a six-run stretch in the top of the seventh, as the Quakers used a go-ahead grand slam to retake the lead, 14-11.

Kelson added another RBI to his ledger in the bottom of the seventh, cutting the deficit to two, but Guilford was able to slam the door on the two-run win to take the season series over Brevard.

GAME TWO: BREVARD 12, GUILFORD 1 (7 INNINGS)

Brevard turned around to dominate game two, run-ruling the Quakers with an 11-run triumph. Brevard surged for a four-run first and added five runs in the fourth to surge towards victory.

Zack Wilson (1-0) earned his first collegiate victory on the mound, hurling five innings with no earned runs around, striking out five batters. Aaron Burchett came on in relief and pitched two innings of scoreless ball.

Oehler dominated with a 2-for-3 performance, scoring three times and driving in four runs including a two-run homer. CP Pyle led the game off for Brevard with a solo shot and ended 2-for-3 with two runs scored as well. Nico Bartolotti added two RBI, while Hayden Jennings scored two runs.

Guilford opened things up with a run in the top of the first. Brevard answered with four runs in the bottom-half of the frame as Pyle's solo shot coupled with Bartolotti's two-RBI single and a balk gave Brevard the early 4-1 lead.

Gavin Grant drove in Jackson Mix on a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the second before a massive five-run fourth frame put BC up 10-1. Oehler capped the game off with a monster two-run shot in the bottom of the fifth, and BC shut the door on Guilford over the final two innings to secure the 12-1 win.

Brevard is back in action on Tuesday, March 4 in Greenville, South Carolina, taking on Bob Jones at 4 p.m.
