BREVARD, N.C. - The Brevard College softball team (2-2) dropped both games of non-conference doubleheader to visiting Agnes Scott (4-4) on Saturday afternoon on Opening Day at the BC Softball Field.
Game One - Agnes Scott 14, Brevard 2 (6 innings/run rule)
After a scoreless opening three innings for both teams that featured strong pitching and defense, Agnes Scott exploded with a five-run fourth. The Scotties added three more runs in the top of the fifth inning to take an 8-0 lead, three outs away from a run-rule victory.
Sophomore
Jadyn Harlow then came off the bench in a pinch-hitting role and delivered with a two-run home run. A towering shot over the left-center field wall, it marked the first homer of the season and the fifth in the career for the native of Halifax, Virginia.
The homer by Harlow was set up by a pinch-hit single by sophomore
Alyssa Boris to lead off the inning. Freshman
Anna Graves pinch-ran for Boris, then with one out was driven home on the Harlow two-run blast.
Agnes Scott answered right back with even more offensive production by scoring six runs in the sixth to ensure the run-rule win.
BC's offense totaled five hits in the contest with singles by
Olivia Martinez,
Regan Winkler and
Gabby Hooper to go along with the home run Harlow and Boris' base hit. Additionally,
Andrea Furr reached base via a walk for the Tornados.
Agnes Scott scored its 14 runs on 14 hits, led by a 3-for-4 performance by Kyra Hornsby.
Bryn Greenwood (1-2) was the winning pitcher for the Scotties and pitched all six innings, striking out six.
Junior left-handed pitcher
Elizabeth Auciello (1-2) started the game for Brevard and was outstanding over the game's first three innings before a difficult fourth frame.
Deana McMinn and
Emily Husband also saw time in the circle for the Tornados in game one of the twin bill.
Game Two - Agnes Scott 9, Brevard 4 (6 innings/darkness)
Agnes Scott took an early 1-0 lead in the first before an enormous seven-run fourth to jump to an 8-0 advantage and once again put Brevard in danger of a run-rule defeat.
The Tornados showed resiliency, answering with their best offensive frame of the day in the bottom of the fourth.
Harlow led the BC half of the fourth with a single, then Graves entered again to run at first. Graves promptly stole second, then reached third on a single by Winkler. Boris knocked Graves home on a hard-hit single to left field for the Tornados' first run. Furr was hit-by-pitch to load the bases for senior
Karley Queen who delivered with a sensational 3-RBI double to cut the deficit in half at 8-4.
ASC added another run in the fifth, while the Tornados were unable to score in the fifth or sixth frames.
Trailing by five, Brevard was unable to attempt a comeback in the seventh inning as the game was called due to darkness.
Queen was 1-for-2 with three RBIs, a double, a hit-by-pitch and a stolen base. Harlow went 2-for-4 in the second game, while Boris was 1-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI. Second baseman
