Vasquez Sets Single-Game Doubles Mark, Brevard Grinds Out Midweek Win

Tornados Score Season-High 13 Runs in Marathon Midweek W

BREVARD, N.C. – Senior third baseman Frankie Vasquez went 4-for-5 with a Brevard College NCAA-era single-game record three doubles, as the BC baseball team (7-13) pulled out a 13-8 victory over Toccoa Falls (11-13) in a Wednesday afternoon bout at Gil Coan Field.

Vasquez, a fourth-year Tornado from Pembroke Pines, Florida, recorded a season-high five RBI while eclipsing the program's single-game doubles mark. All three of Vasquez's doubles drove in baserunners for BC.

Eight different Tornados notched base hits, as Brevard scored a season-high 13 runs with its second-most hits of the season with 15.

Nico Bartolotti, Hunter Busque, Luke Morton, and Logan Sawyer all recorded two hits apiece, while Sawyer scored a team-high three runs. Bartolotti, Cale Oehler, and CP Pyle logged two RBI each, with Bartolotti, Busque, and Morton all reaching plate twice. In addition to Vasquez's three doubles, Busque, Lucas Granata, and Sawyer also totaled doubles, as the Tornados matched the single-game doubles record of six as a team.

Ten different Tornado pitchers worked on the mound in the midweek bullpen game. Kaden Tuten made his first collegiate start, working an inning and two-thirds before Gage Granata's 1.1 innings of action. Andrew Bernard and Kaleb James worked the fourth inning, while Jacob Wilde (1-0) earned his first collegiate victory, throwing a scoreless fifth. Hatcher Bailey, Craig Vacher, Matthew Evans, Michael Geary, and Andy Fahringer finished the job for the Tornados, working in succession on the bump.

The Screaming Eagles got the first run across the top of the first after a single walk and sacrifice bunt, putting runners on second and third with one out. TFC capitalized with an RBI ground out, but the Tornados limited the damage as Tuten struck out the final batter of the frame swinging.

Brevard answered with two runs in the bottom half of the first. Pyle drew a leadoff walk before Sawyer's double down the line put two runners in scoring position. After two-straight outs, Vasquez came up clutch, driving in both runs with a two-RBI double into the left-center field gap.

TFC was able to tie things in the top of the second off a throwing error, making it a 2-2 score. Following a leadoff single and one-out double in the top of the third, Gage Granata impressively worked out of the jam unscathed by forcing a swinging K and a fly out to center.

Toccoa Falls took its first lead of the game with a blooping two-RBI single in the top of the fourth. BC flipped the script immediately, however, with a big bottom-half of the frame. Morton reached on a throwing error ahead of an infield bunt single from Bartolotti. Busque cashed in Morton with an RBI single, and Lucas Granata followed suit with an RBI double that tied things up at four runs apiece. Pyle capped the frame off with a sacrifice fly, as the Tornados retook the lead, 5-4.

BC added three runs to its lead in the bottom of the fifth on a two-RBI single by Bartolotti and an RBI base knock from Pyle. The Screaming Eagles pulled back to within a run with three in the top of the sixth, but BC pulled away for good with a run in the bottom of the frame and a pivotal seventh in which the Tornados brought four across to score. Oehler came up with a two-RBI single before Vasquez's third double of the day scored two more runs.

TFC brought a run across in the top of the eighth, but BC's staff held the Screaming Eagles off the board from there as Brevard wrapped up its five-run triumph, 13-8.

Brevard Baseball is back at Gil Coan Field this weekend for its first USA South Conference home series of the season. The Tornados welcome Pfeiffer with a doubleheader scheduled for Saturday beginning at 12 p.m. The series finale is slated for Sunday at 1 p.m.
