BREVARD, N.C. – The Brevard College softball team (4-9, 0-2 USAS) dropped a pair of games in the USA South Conference season-opening doubleheader to visiting Meredith (10-10, 2-0 USAS) on a windy Saturday afternoon at the BC Softball Field.
GAME ONE – Meredith 13, Brevard 5
The visitors built a big lead early with three runs in the first and seven in the second which proved too much to overcome for the Tornados in the conference opener for both teams.
Brevard scored two runs in both the third and fourth innings, before Meredith added three more runs to take a 13-4 lead in the fifth. BC scored one more run in the bottom of the fifth, but it wasn't enough to avoid the run-rule win for Meredith.
Junior first baseman
Regan Winkler hit a triple, the second of her BC career, driving in two runs. Freshman leadoff hitter
Analee Morris recorded a two-RBI double to go along with two walks.
Addison Smith,
Gabby Hooper and
Summer Crist all scored runs for BC. Hooper, Crist and
Jadyn Harlow also registered base hits.
Meredith was led by Avery Puryear who went 4-for-4 with three doubles and six RBIs. MC's Tess Spangenburg went 2-for-4 with four RBIs.
Starting pitcher Lillie Davis (7-3) earned the win for Meredith with Emily Dorsey pitching the game's final inning.
BC started
Logan Masinsky (2-1) in the circle and later brought in freshman
Deana McMinn who allowed two earned runs in 3.1 innings. Masinsky later re-entered the game for additional action to complete the fifth inning.
The scoring for the Tornados began in the third as Morris led off the frame with a walk which was followed by a hit-by-pitch from
Addison Smith. Winkler then delivered with a triple to score Morris and Smith and get BC on the board. The fourth inning saw Hooper and Crist lead off with back-to-back singles. Morris then blasted a double to drive home the two baserunners.
BC's final run came on a fielder's choice RBI off the bat of designated player
Alyssa Boris. The play scored pinch runner Addie MacDougal, however Meredith was able to record the final out to secure the eight-run differential.
GAME TWO – Meredith 12, Brevard 2
Meredith jumped on the Tornados again with eight runs in the first and one run in the second to take a 9-0 lead. Brevard responded with a pair of runs in the bottom of the second inning, but was shut out the rest of the way as the Avenging Angels took the 12-2 run-rule victory.
The Tornados managed three hits in the contest with third baseman
Andrea Furr registering a double to go along with singles by Winkler and left fielder
Karley Queen who also drove in two runs.
Bailey Owen and
Summer Crist both scored runs, while Boris and Morris each drew walks. Crist and Harlow both also reached base via hit-by-pitch.
The Avenging Angels were led offensively by Ashbee Standrige who went 3-for-4 with three runs scored and a double. Puryear, Davis and Mia Staggs also put together multi-hit games.
Kaylee Manning (3-5) was the winning pitcher, throwing the entire five innings for Meredith. Manning allowed two unearned runs on three hits with five strikeouts and two walks in the effort.
BC sophomore
Savannah Barr started the game and went three innings, allowing six earned runs with one strikeout. Masinsky, the reigning USA South Pitcher of the Week, threw two shutout innings, allowing just three singles in relief of Barr.
Brevard returns to action with its first USA South Conference road trip of 2025 this Wednesday with a trip to face Salem College in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. The Tornados then return home on Saturday, March 29 vs. USA South foe Methodist at the BC Softball Field.
