BREVARD, N.C. – The Brevard College men's lacrosse team (2-3) took down visiting Pitt-Bradford (1-3) with a 14-9 victory on Tuesday evening at Ives-Lemel Family Field. The Tornados never trailed in the contest en route to BC's second win in the last three games and the team's first home win this season.
Junior
Gage Khayat led all scorers with a season-high four goals to go along with an assist. The native of Mesa, Arizona fired off a game-high 12 shots, including nine-shots on goal in the affair. Khayat has scored multiple goals in every game this season, leading the team with 13 goals on the year.
Senior
Michael Peters registered a career-high ten ground balls while scoring three goals and recorded an assist. Junior
Matt Smith set career-highs in assists (3), goals (2), points (5), shots (8) and shots-on-goal (6). Senior
Scott Bundy recorded two goals and an assist, while freshman
Joseph Piazza delivered with two goals. Senior
Brice Peterson scored a goal and dished out an assist to complete the scoring for Brevard.
Jack Hicks (2-3), the senior goalkeeper for BC, recorded six saves on the way to his second win of the season. Freshman goalie
Jameson Murray entered the game in the fourth quarter and registered his first career save as a collegiate student-athlete.
Pitt-Bradford was led by Ben Byers and Joshua Held who both scored three goals. Jaden Freeland added two assists and a goal for the Panthers. Hunter Shank played all 60 minutes in goal for UPB, registering 18 saves in an active night.
The Tornados led wire-to-wire with Bundy starting the scoring just 1:43 into the game with a goal off an assist by Peterson. Just ten seconds later, Peters scored his first goal of the night. A man-up advantage followed for BC with Khayat taking advantage of an assist from Smith to give the Tornados an early 3-0 lead.
In the second quarter, the Panthers cut the margin to 4-3. The Tornados answered however with back-to-back goals by Peters and Smith to pull back ahead by three goals. Late in the second period, Smith hit a buzzer-beater with less than three seconds remaining to send BC into halftime with a 6-3 lead.
The Tornados outscored the Panthers 4-2 in the third period behind goals by Khayat, Peters, Bundy and Piazza. After a Panther goal cut BC's lead to 10-6, Khayat scored back-to-back goals which was followed by Peterson's man-up goal off an assist from Peters to give the Tornados a seven-goal cushion. An insurance goal came late as Smith scored his second of the night off a Khayat assist to punctuate the home victory for the Tornados.
Brevard outshot the Panthers 43-28, while also winning the ground ball battle 41-32. With senior
Logan Southern on faceoffs, BC won 16-of-26 opportunities in the center circle.
Next up for BC is the start of USA South Conference play with a trip to Montgomery, Alabama to take on Huntingdon this Saturday. The Tornados will then return home for a non-conference matchup vs. Husson on Tuesday, March 11 at Ives-Lemel Family Field.
