BC Opens USA South Season with Defeat at Huntingdon

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Brevard College men's lacrosse team (2-4, 0-1 USAS) fell 14-4 on the road to host Huntingdon (2-3, 1-0 USAS) in the USA South Conference opener for both teams on Saturday afternoon at Charles Lee Field in Montgomery, Alabama.

Senior Michael Peters led Brevard with two goals and an assist, while firing off 11 total shots with seven on goal.  Peters also grabbed three ground balls in the effort.  Senior Scott Bundy registered a goal and three ground balls, while junior Gage Khayat scored a goal on one of his seven shots.  Senior Braedyn Perez recorded a team-high four ground balls.  Freshman Joseph Piazza and senior Brice Peterson both added assists. 

Huntingdon was led by Kelcey Marston and Jaxon McMonigle who each scored four goals with Marston adding a game-high three assists.  Tristan Dial added two goals for the Hawks.

Liam Angst of Huntingdon was the winning goalkeeper with six saves in 48 minutes of action.  Senior Jack Hicks played the entire contest in goal for the Tornados, registering 21 saves on a busy afternoon.

The two teams played a scoreless first period with both defenses playing superb to go along with saves from both Hicks and Angst.  The Hawks finally broke the deadlock just over one minute into the second quarter with the first of three goals by McMonigle.  A fourth straight goal with seven minutes remaining in the first half gave HC an early 4-0 lead.

Khayat scored off an assist by Piazza with six minutes remaining before halftime to get BC on the scoreboard.  Three more Hawk goals followed however as the hosts took a 7-1 advantage to the intermission.

Huntingdon extended its lead even further with two goals at the start of the third period.  With two minutes remaining in the third period, Peters found the back of the net for the first of his two goals off an assist by Peterson.  Peters struck again in the fourth quarter on an unassisted goal which was followed by a goal from Bundy late in the game to round out BC's scoring.      

Brevard returns to action with a non-conference matchup vs. Husson, 4 p.m. on Tuesday at Ives-Lemel Family Field.  The game will be the first of three straight home games for the Tornados with another non-conference contest on Thursday vs. Earlham followed by the USA South home opener vs. Greensboro on Saturday, March 15 at Ives-Lemel Family Field.
