BREVARD, N.C. – The Brevard College baseball team (4-9) came up big in the late innings to take a 9-6 road victory over host Huntingdon (10-5) on Friday evening on day one of the Firehouse Classic at the Neal Posey Field in Montgomery, Alabama. The Tornados came from behind with a four-run sixth inning before three-run eighth inning sealed the deal for BC.
Catcher
Hunter Busque led the charge offensively, going 3-for-4 with three RBI, a double and a run scored. First baseman
Cale Oehler hit a two-RBI double, while
Hayden Jennings,
Frankie Vasquez and
Nico Bartolotti all drove in runs as well. Leadoff hitter
CP Pyle reached base four times and scored two runs, while second baseman
Adam Newcomb also scored twice.
Sophomore right-handed pitcher
Zack Wilson earned the win for the Tornados, going a career-long 7.2 innings. Wilson allowed four runs on eight hits in the effort, while walking three batters.
Aaron Burchett relieved Wilson, then junior
Andy Fahringer recorded the game's final out via strikeout to register the save.
JB Landrum started on the mound for Huntingdon and went five complete innings, giving up two runs on two hits. Landrum struck out five and walked five, while throwing 100 total pitches. Evan Clark (0-1) took the loss for the Hawks.
Brevard jumped on top early with two runs in the top of the first inning. Pyle and Jennings both drew walks to lead off the contest, followed by a two-run double by Oehler to score both baserunners. For Oehler, it marked his team-leading eighth double of the season and his 48th double in his career.
Huntingdon responded with a run in the bottom of the first to cut BC's advantage to 2-1. After a scoreless second inning, the Hawks then delivered with two runs on a four-hit third inning to take the lead 3-2.
The Tornados rallied back in the sixth inning as Oehler led off the frame with a hit-by-pitch that was followed by a single from
Frankie Vasquez. With two outs, Busque came through with a big two-RBI double to left field, scoring both Oehler and Vasquez to propel BC back into the lead. The big inning continued as the bases were loaded for Jennings who drilled a two-RBI single that scored Pyle and
Adam Newcomb to give the Tornados a 6-2 lead.
The Hawks scratched another run in the bottom of the sixth to cut the margin to 6-3. After a scoreless seventh inning, BC exploded with a three-run eighth to take further control of the game late.
Bartolotti reached base on a single, then reached third on an error. Busque came to the plate again, this time driving home Bartolotti with an RBI single to left field. After a pitching change, Newcomb reached on a fielder's choice and Pyle hit a single.
Tyler Kelson then reached on a hit-by-pitch to load the base. Back-to-back wild pitches would follow to bring home runs by both Newcomb and Pyle to cap off the three-run frame.
Wilson and Burchett combined to shut out the Hawks in the eighth inning and preserve the 9-4 lead. Huntingdon scored two runs in the ninth. With a three-run lead and runners on second and third, Fahringer closed out the game with a strikeout to earn the save and the road win for the Tornados.
Brevard returns to action Saturday and Sunday in Montgomery, Alabama with a pair of neutral-site games at Neal Posey Field. First up will be a tilt vs. Mississippi University for Women at 1 p.m. ET/12 p.m. CT. Then on Sunday, BC will face Millsaps at 1 p.m. ET/12 p.m. CT on the final day of the Firehouse Classic.
