BREVARD, N.C. - Bryce Bernitt and Hayden LeBlanc came from behind to earn a pair of impressive singles wins, but the Brevard College men's tennis team (8-3, 1-1 USA South) dropped the overall match to Pfeiffer University (8-3, 1-1 USAS) on a sunny Tuesday afternoon at the McCoy Tennis Complex.
Bernitt, a senior from Flowery Branch, Georgia, clinched number-two singles vs. Pfeiffer's Mathius Dessureau, overcoming a 6-4 defeat in set number one with a 7-5 result in the second set, sending the match to a tiebreaking third set. Bernitt jumped ahead, 8-4, before Dessureau tied the tiebreaker back up, 8-8. The senior came through in the clutch with consecutive points, capping Brevard's day on a high note.
LeBlanc, a second-year Tornado from Zachary, Louisiana, fell in a 6-2 first set to PU's Benedikt Pfeiffer, but rallied back with an impressive 7-5 second-set win. In the tiebreaker, LeBlanc clutched the match out with a 10-8 result, as the Tornados won the top-two singles competitions of the afternoon.
Pfeiffer kicked things off in convincing fashion by sweeping doubles. The Falcons clinched the match with four-straight singles wins in the three-through-six spots on the card.
Brevard is back in action this weekend, as the Tornados head to Staunton, Virginia to face Mary Baldwin on Saturday at 11 a.m.
