BREVARD, N.C. - The Brevard College baseball team (13-18, 8-6 USA South) held on for a 5-3 victory over Greensboro College (20-13, 10-4 USAS) on Sunday afternoon at Gil Coan Field.
Following BC's victory in game two of the three-game set, Brevard overcame a three-run deficit in game three of the series, tying the game in the bottom of the ninth. After a pair of scoreless extra-inning frames, the game was suspended due to darkness. The matchup will resume from the point of suspension (tied 7-7, top of the 12th) if the game is needed for postseason positioning. If not, the game will result in a tie.
In the first contest of the day, the Tornados scored five runs in the first two innings, and held on to their slim lead the rest of the way en route to the two-run victory.
Sophomore right-handed pitcher Aaron Burchett (1-2) earned his first collegiate start in the game, throwing five innings without allowing an earned run with two strikeouts. Colin Weathers bridged the gap with 2.1 innings of scoreless work, while Andy Fahringer nailed down his second save of the season, striking out four batters in an inning and two thirds.
Five different Tornados recorded hits, including Hunter Busque's two-run homer to left field and Cale Oehler's two-RBI single. Hayden Jennings drove in a run on a sacrifice fly, and CP Pyle came across for two of BC's five runs.
Brevard jumped out early in the bottom of the first as Oehler roped a single up the middle that scored Jennings and Pyle. Busque kept the positive momentum going into the second inning with a two-run big fly to left. Jennings tacked on a run with a sacrifice fly to make it a 5-0 Tornado lead.
The Pride took advantage of a would-be inning-ending out on a Tornado error and scored three runs in the top of the third to cut the deficit to a two-run margin. Those runs would prove to be the last ones either side would score the rest of the way. A defensive struggle ensued, with Brevard making more plays down the stretch to clinch the series split.
The Tornados are back in action this coming weekend against William Peace on the road in Cary, North Carolina. The Pacers and Nados open the series on Friday, April 18 at 4 p.m. and a doubleheader is scheduled for Saturday, April 19 at 1 p.m.
