BREVARD, N.C. - The Brevard College baseball team (16-21, 11-9-1 USA South) concluded its 2025 regular season on Sunday afternoon, falling 7-6 to Mary Baldwin University (7-33, 5-16 USAS) at Gil Coan Field.
The Tornados now turn their attention to the first round of the 2025 USA South Conference Tournament, as BC has wrapped up the three-seed in the postseason. Brevard will travel to Greensboro for a three-team, double-elimination tournament beginning on Thursday, May 1.
In a touching moment at Gil Coan Field, Brevard gave a curtain call to its everyday senior starters in the top of the first inning. Lucas Granata, Hayden Jennings, Luke Morton, Cale Oehler, CP Pyle, and Frankie Vasquez all started the game, and were all subbed out for fellow seniors Alex Dial, Jackson Mix, Christian Riley, Jack Weaver, Noah Wiggins, and Baylor Wyatt. Additionally, senior Davis Bryson and graduate student Patrick Usher started and played in the entire contest.
Weaver put forth a career outing with his first three Tornado hits in a 3-for-5 effort, driving in three RBI and notching a double as well. Riley punched his first two collegiate hits through, while Diaz and Wyatt each went 2-for-5 at the plate.
Mary Baldwin scored two in the first before a three-run third put the visitors up by six. The Tornados found an answer with a four-run fourth, as Weaver began the rally with an RBI single to center. Wyatt came across on a passed ball before Hunter Busque and Bryson drew bases-loaded walks that cut the deficit to two runs, 6-4.
Wyatt led off the bottom of the fifth with a single, and advanced to second on a throwing error. After a one-out wild pitch, Weaver singled home Wyatt to cut the MBU lead to just one run, 6-5.
After a pair of scoreless innings for both sides, Mary Baldwin launched a solo homer to record an important insurance run, as Brevard prepared for a ninth-inning rally.
Usher drew a one-out walk in the bottom of the ninth and got his curtain call, as Logan Sawyer entered as a pinch runner. Wyatt then reached on a fielder's choice and then got his curtain call as Kyle Andrew came in to pinch run. Dial singled ahead of Weaver, who drilled a double down the right-field line that scored Andrew and pulled the Tornados within one. Mix was hit by a pitch to load the bases, but Mary Baldwin forced a pop out that secured the victory.
