Massive Fourth Innings Lead Monarchs to Two Wins over Tornados

Series Finale on Sunday at 1 p.m.

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - The Brevard College baseball team (12-16, 7-4 USA South) suffered its first USA South Conference series loss of 2025, as the Tornados saw a four-game win streak snapped at the hands of first-place Methodist University (20-9, 9-2 USAS) on Saturday afternoon at Armatrong-Shelley Field.

The Monarchs used a seven-run fourth inning to propel themselves to a 13-1 triumph in seven innings via run-rule. A six-run fourth helped Methodist sweep the day with a 13-4 game-two win.

GAME ONE: METHODIST 13, BREVARD 1 (7 Inn.)

Methodist used a three-run homer in the bottom of the first to jump out to a 3-0 lead. Brevard answered in the top of the third when CP Pyle led off the frame with a HBP, advanced to second on a wild pitch, and got to third on a single. Logan Sawyer drove him in with a RBI fielder's choice, trimming the deficit to two.

The Monarchs stranded a pair in scoring position in the bottom-half of the third, but came through in a big way in the bottom of the fourth. Two bases-loaded walks and an RBI HBP put Methodist up 6-1, and after the Tornados turned to their bullpen, the Monarchs tagged them up for four more runs in the frame as the hosts surged ahead by nine.

Methodist added two in the bottom of the fifth with an RBI fielder's choice and single, and a bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the sixth pushed the Monarchs over the run-rule threshold.

Lucas Granata and Hayden Jennings collected two hits apiece for Brevard, with Jennings and Tyler Kelson recording doubles. The Tornados left 10 runners stranded as a team in game one.

GAME TWO: METHODIST 13, BREVARD 4

BC put game one behind itself and got off to a solid start in the second contest, with Cale Oehler doubling to right-center field to score Pyle. Frankie Vasquez pulled a single through the left side that brought Oehler around to score, as the Tornados took the early lead 2-0.

The Monarchs got on the board in the bottom of the second with a sacrifice fly, and a two-run homer in the third gave Methodist its first lead of the game, 3-2.

Another pivotal fourth inning ensued for Methodist, kickstarted by back-to-back leadoff singles and a sacrifice bunt. An RBI groundout pushed the Monarch lead to two, and Methodist then used a two-out rally that included three RBI singles, an RBI double, and a throwing error to push five more runs across, breaking things open at 9-2.

Oehler launched his seventh home run of the season and 22nd career blast, a solo shot in the top of the sixth. Methodist responded with two runs each in the bottom of the seventh and eighth innings, and a ninth-inning RBI single was all Brevard could muster down the stretch in a nine-run loss, 13-4.

The Tornados will attempt to salvage a win in the series finale on Sunday at 1 p.m.
