SEWANEE, Tenn. – The Brevard College volleyball team (0-4) concluded action on Saturday at the Sewanee Invitational, hosted by The University of the South in Sewanee, Tennessee. BC fell in four sets to Maryville College (2-0) and Huntingdon College (2-1) in a pair of matches.
MARYVILLE 3, BREVARD 1 (25-12, 17-25, 25-15, 25-23)
With the score 6-6 early in the first set of action, Maryville was able to rattle off a 10-1 run and cruised from there to a 13-point first-set victory. Brevard flipped the script in set number two, using a 11-2 run that established a 20-11 advantage. Maryville cut the deficit to five at 20-15, but BC was able to pull away by scoring five of the next seven points to clinch the set, 25-17. Consecutive
Abigail Kelly kills ended the frame.
Maryville took control of the third set midway through, using sizeable runs to sprint to a 10-point set win. Brevard hung tough in set number four, leading throughout the stanza with a late-set lead of 22-19. The Scots were able to find an answer, however, as consecutive kills by Kylie Wilhelmi and a Tornado attack error tied the fourth set up at 22 points.
BC retook the lead in the fourth set, 23-22, after a Maryville service error, but the Scots found a way through – scoring three-straight to win the set 25-23 and take the 3-1 match win.
In just her third collegiate match, freshman outside hitter
Malahna Hoyle led all Tornados with seven kills, while Kelly and
Caroline Moon each put up six kills. Senior middle blocker
Jaxson Tumicki racked up six total blocks, with fellow senior
Lili White leading the defense with 15 digs. Maryville's Wilhelmi led all attackers with 18 kills, while Megan Fairburn (17 assists) and Dakota Vaiese (15 assists) facilitated the Scot offensive attack.
HUNTINGDON 3, BREVARD 1 (25-22, 22-25, 25-13, 28-26)
Brevard matched up with yet another former USA South Conference foe to close out action at the Sewanee Invitational with Huntingdon, as the Hawks took a four-set decision in BC's tournament finale.
The Hawks leaned on a balanced attack, led by Morgan Suggs with 11 kills and Aly Harris with 10. Setter Molly Wilson directed the offense with 18 assists and added a team-high six service aces.
Brevard pushed the match to the brink, forcing extra points in the decisive fourth set. Kelly paced the Tornados with a double-double of 14 kills and 15 digs, while Moon added 13 kills. Setter
Izzy Boulay finished with 23 assists.
After splitting the first two sets, Huntingdon took control in the third, holding Brevard to a negative hitting percentage in a 25-13 win. The Tornados rallied in the fourth behind Kelly and Moon, but the Hawks fought off multiple set points before closing it out 28-26.
BC returns to action next weekend at the Maroon Classic, hosted by Roanoke College in Salem, Virginia. Brevard faces Hollins University (3 p.m.) and Carolina University (7 p.m.) on Friday, September 5, before taking on tournament host Roanoke at 10 a.m. on Saturday, September 6, and wrapping up vs. Randolph College at 2 p.m. Brevard's anticipated 2025 home debut is on Tuesday, September 9 at 6 p.m. against Bob Jones University.
