BREVARD, N.C. – The Southern Virginia University Knights (3-5-1, 1-0-0 USA South) used a first-half goal coupled with an 83
rd minute insurance strike to defeat the Brevard College men's soccer team (1-3-3, 0-1-0 USAS) 2-1 on Saturday evening at Ives-Lemel Family Field.
The result marked Southern Virginia's first USA South victory of the season, while Brevard dropped its conference opener. SVU picked up its first win over BC in men's soccer in its program's history. Saturday's contest was pushed back to a 5:45 p.m. start time due to a lengthy pre-match lightning delay.
Tate Hickman opened the scoring in the 39
th minute, finishing a feed from Benjamin Simister and Jacob Cornejo to give the Knights a 1-0 halftime edge. Simister then doubled the lead with his 83
rd-minute strike.
Brevard pulled one back late, as
Tristan Bayssade scored with 11 seconds remaining, off an assist from
Will Finney, but the Tornados' comeback bid fell short. Bayssade's goal marked his first as a member of BC men's soccer, while Finney distributed his second career assist.
The Knights held a 2-1 edge in goals despite being outshot 18-15. Brevard goalkeeper
Manuel Tovar Hagstrom made five saves, while Southern Virginia's Troy Chamberlain stopped five shots to secure the win.
The Tornados return to USA South action on the road next Tuesday, Sept. 30, as Brevard heads to Greensboro, N.C. to take on Greensboro College at 6:30 p.m.
