FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – The Brevard College men's basketball team (6-7, 0-3 USA South) built a first half lead, but couldn't withstand a second half surge from Methodist (6-7, 2-2 USAS), falling in the final moments, 58-56 on Saturday evening.
After a back-and-forth first few minutes of play, Brevard scored five-straight capped off by a KK Horton layup to take an early 10-5 lead. The Tornados would keep the Monarchs at arms length throughout the first half, scoring eight-straight to end the half, five of which coming from Tyler Baldwin to stretch the lead to ten at the halftime break.
Brevard shot a stellar 52 percent in the first half, knocking down five threes. The Tornados were also stellar defensively, holding the Monarchs to 32 percent shooting with only two made threes.
The Tornadoes held the lead for 18:21 in the first half, never trailing. BC maintained the double-digit edge through the first couple minutes of the second half courtesy of a Dre'Shaun Brown jumper and a pair of Jadon Carnes free throws. However, a 9-0 Methodist run tied the game at 41.
Methodist gained the lead and eventually grew the lead to as much as six. However, Jadon Carnes scored four in a row to tie the game at 54 with under four minutes to go.
The scoring was sparse the rest of the way, as the game remained tied at 54 until the 1:54 mark when Methodist regained the two-point edge on a jumper. The tally remained until Tyler Baldwin knocked down a midrange jumper to tie the game with 30 seconds left.
It looked like the game was heading to overtime, but Methodist's Brian Bullock drew a foul with 0.4 seconds to play and knocked down two free throws to create the final tally at 58-56.
Methodist outscored Brevard 34-22 in the second half. The Tornados shot 30.8 percent in the second half while Methodist shot 43.3 percent. Tyler Baldwin led the way with 16 points, while Jadon Carnes also scored in double figures with 12.
Dontavious Pettaway paced the Monarchs with 12 points, while Brian Bullock added 11.
The Tornados face a quick turnaround, squaring off with NC Wesleyan in Rocky Mount, North Carolina, tomorrow at 2 p.m.
