BREVARD, N.C. - Senior forward Jadon Carnes led all scorers with 22 points, but the Brevard College men's basketball team (6-9, 0-5 USA South) could not overcome defending USA South Conference champion Pfeiffer (7-8, 3-2 USAS) on Tuesday night at the Boshamer Gymnasium.
Carnes, who was honored before tipoff with a special game ball for becoming the sixth Tornado in the NCAA era to score 1,000 career points, totaled 22 points on an 8-of-10 mark from the field, drilling all three of his 3-point attempts. KK Horton added a season-best 16 points on 8-of-14 shooting, while Twain Wilson posted 11 points and three 3-pointers.
Pfeiffer's Doug Smith scored 19 points, grabbed 12 rebounds, distributed four assists, and swatted a pair of shots to set the tone for the Falcons. Smith was joined in double digits by the guard tandem of Clayton Robinson and Sean Sucarichi, who each scored 16. PFU's starting lineup of Robinson, Smith, Sucarichi, Justin Gaten, and Zach Sloan accounted for 67 of the 80 total Falcon points.
The Falcons were hot from the field, shooting 56% with 33 made field goals. Brevard edged Pfeiffer in 3-pointers (8-5), and BC created 21 points off turnovers. Pfeiffer got out in transition with 24 fast break points, dominated down low with 50 points in the paint, and controlled the class outrebounding Brevard 40-17.
Pfeiffer led for the first portion of the first half before Brevard flipped the script, using a 12-0 run to take a game-high five-point lead, 27-22, with 7:12 left in the stanza. The visitors were able to respond, outpacing BC 16-6 down the stretch to take a 38-33 halftime lead.
Brevard cut Pfeiffer's advantage all the way back down to one point, 53-52, at the 10:39 mark, but the Falcons found the winning formula, pushing their lead back out to double digits twice while holding on for the nine-point league win, 80-71.
The Tornados will continue the pursuit of their first conference win of the season on Saturday at 2 p.m. against William Peace.
