Tornados Pull Out Road Win, Sweep JWU

CHARLOTTE - The Brevard College men's basketball team (8-9) held on for a 78-74 road victory at JWU Charlotte (2-16) on Tuesday night at the JWU Wildcat Center in Charlotte. The victory secured a season sweep for the Tornados over JWU.

Junior guard Khalil Black had a breakout performance, as the Bronx, New York newcomer by way of Borough of Manhattan Community College scored a season-high 15 points to lead the Tornado bench. Senior forward Jadon Carnes led all Tornados with 18 points on 8-of-14 shooting while also hauling in eight rebounds, and KK Horton added 12 points, four rebounds, and four assists.

Brevard shot an efficient 56% from the field, matching its season best from the field, and added seven made 3-pointers. BC led by as many as 15 points in the contest, scored 36 points in the paint, and totaled 18 points off Wildcat turnovers.

Cole Calloway led all scorers with 26 points on nine made field goals and eight free throws, accounting for over a third of JWU's scoring. The Wildcats were held to just a 41% mark from the field and a 3-of-16 performance from long distance, but JWU did force BC into 15 turnovers.

Brevard fell behind early, 12-6, but used a quick 10-0 run to take the lead - a lead the Tornados would hold for the remainder of the half. JWU kept within single digits, but BC pushed its edge out to as many as nine points before taking a 40-33 lead into the break. Carnes and Horton led BC with eight points each, while Dre'Shaun Brown, Caleb Duncan, and Twain Wilson all had five apiece at the intermission.

JWU battled back, retaking the lead 48-46 five minutes into the second half of action. BC responded with a 20-5 scoring stretch to jump ahead by 13 points, 66-53 with nine minutes to go. BC held its game-high 15-point lead at the 7:27 mark, 71-56, and withstood a late JWU charge to clinch the season sweep with a four-point triumph, 78-74.

Brevard's next matchup is a rematch against Southern Virginia. The contest is currently scheduled for Saturday at 5 p.m., but is subject to adjustment due to pending winter weather conditions.
