Tornados Sweep Mountaineers with Pair of Shutouts

6-0 Start to 2026 Best Start to a Season in the NCAA Era

BREVARD, N.C. – The Brevard College baseball team (6-0) used a handful of big innings and stellar pitching to sweep Berea (0-5) in a doubleheader, 10-0 and 12-0, via run rule on Saturday afternoon at Gil Coan Field.

The two wins mark the fifth time in six tries that the Tornados have scored double-digit runs. Additionally, Brevard has not allowed a game to go a full nine innings so far this season with four run-rule victories. The Tornados are off to the program's best start (6-0) to start a campaign in the NCAA era.

GAME ONE: BREVARD 10, BEREA 0 (7 Inn.)

After a scoreless first inning on the mound from Jonathan Germany, Brevard got the bats going early in game one. Bryson Genwright and Lucas Woodard ripped back-to-back singles and quickly got into scoring position with stolen bases. Davis Anders loaded the bases, before Gavin McCoy tallied a sacrifice fly to give BC the early 1-0 lead.

Brevard would add onto its lead with one out in the first, as Kacey Shanks scored two on an RBI single and Adam Newcomb kicked off a brilliant offensive effort with an RBI double to create a 4-0 tally in the first.

Solid pitching efforts from BC's Germany and Berea's Spencer Blackwell kept the score where it was until the fourth, where Brevard would add on to its lead. Newcomb led off the inning by launching his first career home run, a solo shot to grow the lead to five runs. Moe Love Jr. followed with a single before Genwright legged out an RBI triple to further extend the lead. Woodard capped off a three-run inning with a sacrifice fly, making it 7-0 Brevard after four.

Germany dealt a scoreless fifth before Aaron Burchett entered in relief for the top of the sixth. Germany, the Thomas University transfer, dealt five scoreless frames in his second start for BC, striking out five while allowing just two hits. Burchett struck out the side in the sixth, opening the door for Brevard to add to the lead in the home half.

With one out in the bottom half of the sixth, the freshman Genwright ripped his second extra-base hit, a double to get into scoring position. Woodard followed with a walk and a stolen base before Davis Anders cashed in both on a two-RBI single. Tyson Hinkle would put the Tornados in run-rule territory, capping off a three-run inning with an RBI single to make it 10-0.

Burchett would make quick work of the Mountaineers in the top of the seventh, striking out the side for the second-consecutive frame, closing out the run-rule victory. Germany earned the win, and Burchett followed with two flawless innings, tallying six strikeouts.

Seven Tornados tallied RBI in the contest, with Anders, Newcomb, and Shanks collecting two apiece. On the basepaths, Brevard tied a single-game NCAA-era program record for stolen bases in a game, stealing nine bags.

GAME TWO: BREVARD 12, BEREA 0 (7 Inn.)

Brevard started game two in a similar fashion after Matthew Evans stranded a one-out double on second base. Gavin Grant ripped a leadoff single in the bottom half and stole a pair of bases to get to third. Anders walked and stole second before McCoy ripped a two-RBI double to give the Tornados a 2-0 edge. McCoy would later come in to score on an error, making it 3-0 Brevard after one.

Like game one, both teams went dormant offensively in the middle innings. The combination of BC's Evans, Andy Fahringer, and Kalen Milstead held the Mountaineers scoreless while Berea's Edrick Rivera returned the favor with three scoreless before being relieved in the fifth by Wilmer Moran.

Brevard's bats woke up again in the sixth. The Tornados worked two walks before Grant was plunked by a pitch, loading the bases. Woodard was then hit by a pitch up and in, scoring one and adding to BC's lead for the first time since the first inning. Anders followed in a big way, blowing the doors off the nightcap with a grand slam, the second home run of the young season for the Mars Hill transfer, making it 9-0 Brevard.

Kyle Andrew pinch ran for McCoy after a walk, and scored on a wild pitch before an error scored one more. Brevard capped off the inning with a Declan Duffy sacrifice fly to create the final 12-0 tally.

Milstead slammed the door, completing his second inning of scoreless work, earning a two inning save. Evans earned his second win in as many tries with three innings of one-hit, scoreless baseball. Fahringer dealt two scoreless innings, allowing just one hit and setting the table for Milstead to close it out.

Brevard's doubleheader sweep helped the Tornados stay flawless in 2026, in a NCAA era best 6-0 start to the season. The scheduled finale between Brevard and Berea has been canceled due to inclement weather entering the area on Sunday.

Brevard will have some time off with no midweek contest, preparing for a three-game set with Capital, starting with one game on Friday, Feb. 20 at 2 p.m. before a doubleheader on Saturday, Feb. 21, starting at noon.
