Comets Surge Past Tornados in Doubleheader Sweep

Capital Uses High-Powered Offense to Take Two

BREVARD, N.C. – The Brevard College baseball team (6-2) faced a setback for the first time in 2026, as Capital (5-0) used a couple of big innings to sweep the doubleheader, 15-5 and 12-4, on Friday afternoon at Gil Coan Field.

The Comets held the Tornados to their two lowest offensive outputs so far in the young 2026 season, while combining to score 27 runs over 18 innings of action.

GAME ONE: CAPITAL 15, BREVARD 5

Both sides were held scoreless in the first as the Tornados' Jonathan Germany and the Comets' Nash Andrix dealt scoreless frames to start the late morning action.

Capital opened the scoring in the second, as Ty Clifton doubled to lead off the inning before Gio Mastrorosa doubled to score Clifton and give the Comets a 1-0 edge.

Nico Bartolotti continued his hot start to 2026 with a one-out double, but despite getting runners to second and third with two outs, Andrix forced a shallow fly out to right to keep the Tornados off the board and maintain the 1-0 edge after two.

Capital picked up where it left off in the third inning, starting with a Charlie Colson bunt single. After a walk that moved Colson to second, Bryce Kyees scored Colson on an RBI double, moving Kielan LaMarr to third. Ty Clifton then tallied his second hit of the ballgame on an RBI single to score LaMarr and make it 3-0 Comets.

Nash Andrix struck out the side in the bottom half of the third, allowing the Comets to extend the lead in the fourth. Aaron Burchett came in for Jonathan Germany with two outs in the fourth, following a two-out single, and Kielan LaMarr cashed in Colson from first to extend the lead to four.

Brevard had an answer in the home half of the fourth, as Nico Bartolotti ripped another base hit before Tyson Hinkle cut the deficit in half with one swing of the bat, leaving the yard for his second home run of the season, a two-run shot to cut the deficit to 4-2 after four innings.

Burchett dealt a scoreless fifth, getting the offense back to work. Tyler Kelson and Brysen Genwright got aboard on a walk and a hit-by-pitch before Lucas Woodard doubled to left, scoring Kelson to make it a one-run game. Davis Anders followed with a sacrifice fly, scoring Genwright to tie the game at four.

However, the Comets didn't skip a beat offensively. After the first two Capital batters reached, a LaMarr bunt single resulted in a two-base error, scoring two to make it 6-4, sending LaMarr all the way to third. Kyees quickly scored LaMarr with the RBI single, and a Robbie Harrison single to follow ended Burchett's day.

Andy Fahringer entered for the Tornados, and Capital was able to add four more, capped by a two-run home run from Gio Mastrosos, making it 11-4 Capital following a seven-run sixth inning.

Both sides remained scoreless until the top of the eighth, where Capital added on with a pair of RBI singles to extend the lead to nine runs. A pair of ninth-inning solo home runs made it 15-4 with three outs to work with.

Owen Timmerman started the bottom half of the ninth with his first career hit, a leadoff double to get into scoring position. Timmerman would come in to score on a wild pitch, but it would not be enough as Brevard suffered its first setback of 2026, 15-5.

Nash Andrix pitched five innings for the Comets, allowing four hits, four earned runs, and striking out six to earn the win. Noah Bromberg tossed a four-inning save, allowing five hits, an earned run, and striking out six.

Jonathan Germany dealt the first 3.2 innings for the Tornados, allowing four runs on seven hits, walking two, and striking out six. Aaron Burchett was handed the loss, throwing 1.1 innings, allowing four runs on five hits with a walk and a strikeout. Andy Fahringer, Jaeger Pankowski, and Clay Davis combined for the final four innings of work.

GAME TWO: CAPITAL 12, BREVARD 4

Brevard's Matthew Evans got the start in game two and held Capital scoreless in the first, allowing the Brevard offense to get to work early. With one out in the bottom half, Lucas Woodard launched a solo home run, his second of the season, to give Brevard its first lead of the day at 1-0 after the first.

Capital's Ty Clifton wasted no time responding, evening the tally with a leadoff solo home run of his own to make it 1-1. Evans and Capital's Will Furry traded scoreless frames until the top of the fourth, where Capital regained the lead on a wild pitch.

Brevard would answer in the bottom half as the Tornados loaded the bases with two outs. Freshman Moe Love Jr. swung the Tornados back in front with a two-out, two-RBI single to give the Tornados a 3-2 edge after four.

Evans was relieved by Gage Granata in the fifth. The Comets responded to the Tornados' surge in the third with a Robbie Harrison RBI double and a two-run error to take a two-run lead, 5-3. Capital added on in the sixth on a Mike Andryszcz solo home run and a Bryce Kyees RBI single, growing the lead to 7-3.

Brevard's Gavin Grant chipped into the deficit with a leadoff solo home run in the bottom of the seventh, his first career long ball to cut the deficit to 7-4. However, the Comets' Casey Wilkins retired three of the next four Tornados to limit the damage to just one.

The score remained the same until the top of the ninth, where the Comets loaded the bases with just one out. A sacrifice fly from Kielan LaMarr, RBI singles from Bryce Kyees and Ty Clifton, and a two-RBI double from Robbie Harrison blew the game open, making it 12-4 in the ninth. Brevard would go down in order in the bottom half, as Capital earned the doubleheader sweep.

Evans dealt a strong four innings in his second start of the season, allowing two runs on three hits with a walk and two strikeouts. Granata, who is dealt the loss, pitched the next 1.2 innings, allowing three runs on five hits with a walk and two strikeouts. Stash Spear dealt a scoreless inning, while Grayson Ledford, Michael Geary, and Kaleb James combined for the final 2.1 innings.

Brevard will look to salvage the series finale with Capital on Saturday with a noon first pitch at Gil Coan Field.
