BREVARD, N.C. - Brevard College women's lacrosse (0-1) kicked off its 2026 campaign with a 19-7 defeat at the hands of local foe Montreat (3-1) on Friday evening at Ives-Lemel Family Field.
Senior midfielder Madi Norris matched a career-high three goals, won four draws, and caused three turnovers defensively. Senior attacker Xan Hill added two goals, two assists, three draw controls, and four caused turnovers, while Arianna Casertano wrapped up the Tornado goalscorers with a pair of strikes. Junior goalkeeper Kyla Smith-Fondall made a grand total of 14 saves, including 11 second-half stops.
Montreat's Grace Wiegand led the Cavaliers' charge towards victory with a 10-goal performance. Marley Smith found the back of the net five times, with Ruthann Stout scoring twice with two assists. Ailani Soto dished out three assists with a goal in the 19-goal effort.
Wigand got the scoring underway with back-to-back scores in the first four minutes of play. Hill answered for Brevard with her first goal of 2026, but Montreat was able to score two more to push its edge to a three-goal margin.
With Montreat on a power play opportunity, the Tornados managed a defensive stop, and Norris scored on the other end for a player-down goal with 7:53 left in the first period.
Two Cavalier goals put the visitors up by four, but scores by Casertano and Hill just before the end of the quarter pulled Brevard back to within two, 6-4.
Norris found the back of the net three minutes into the second quarter put Brevard within one. Montreat found an answer for BC's scoring run, putting four past the Tornados to take a 10-5 halftime advantage.
The Cavaliers were able to fire past Brevard in the second half, outscoring the Tornados 9-2 to close out the 19-7 win.
Brevard will hit the road for its first conference contest of 2026 when it heads to Rocky Mount, N.C. to face NC Wesleyan at 12 p.m.
