Ten-Run Fifth Leads to Massive Run-Rule Win over Piedmont

BREVARD, N.C. - The Brevard College baseball team (13-6) scored a whopping 10 runs in the fifth inning and 12 total unanswered runs to surge past (RV) Piedmont (12-7), 15-4, in seven innings on Tuesday afternoon at Gil Coan Field.

BC and Piedmont were deadlocked at 3-3 after four innings of play, and after the Tornados held the Lions - who are receiving votes in the D3baseball.com national top 25 poll - scoreless in the fifth, BC blazed to a 10-run lead in the bottom of the fifth.

Piedmont kicked things off with a pair of runs in the top of the first, utilizing infield singles and stolen bases to scratch a pair across. Brevard answered with a run in the bottom-half of the frame with Adam Newcomb ripping a one-out single down the first base line, coming around to score with Andrew Bernard's RBI groundout.

Piedmont scored one in the third on an RBI groundout of its own, and the Tornados stuck back in the bottom of the frame, tying the contest with a two-out rally. Two walks and a single loaded the bases up, and Lucas Woodard delivered a two-RBI single through the left side of the infield to knot the score up at 3-3.

The Tornados surged for 10 runs on six hits and three Lion errors in the bottom of the fifth to turn the game on its head. The frame began with a Tyler Kelson double, followed by Newcomb's sacrifice bunt that placed runners on the corners. Bernard drew a walk to load the bases, and a two RBI single from Hunter Busque started the scoring onslaught.

The first of Piedmont's mistakes happened with the bases loaded where a taylor-made double play ball was tossed over 2B, allowing a pair to score and pushing BC's edge to a 7-3 margin.

A single loaded the bases back up before Kyle Andrew pushed a single through the left side of the infield, making it a five-run advantage. Another double play ball was mishandled by the Lions, as the sixth run of the inning crossed the plate. Newcomb's RBI FC was the second out of the bottom of the fifth, but allowed the Tornados' seventh run to score.

Bernard ripped a double that brought two more runners across, and Busque pushed the 10th run of the frame in with an RBI single.

BC tacked on two more in the bottom of the sixth, and slammed the door on the run-rule win in the top of the seventh.

Four Tornados accumulated multiple hits in the winning effort, with Bernard and Busque both going 2-for-3 at the dish with three RBI apiece. Gage Granata (2-1) secured the win on the mound with scoreless work alongside Aaron Burchett and Jacob Wilde, while Barger Shook made his first collegiate start.

The Tornados are back to USA South play this weekend, hosting a three-game series against Methodist starting with a doubleheader on Saturday at noon.
