MISENHEIMER, N.C. - The Brevard College baseball team (14-15, 3-9 USA South) fell in all three games to first-place Pfeiffer (15-13, 9-2 USAS) on Friday and Saturday at Joe Ferebee Field.
Pfeiffer surged with a Friday afternoon triumph, 10-4, and took a decisive win in game two, 15-7. The Tornados made a late comeback effort in game three, but ultimately dropped the contest by a final of 8-5.
GAME ONE: PFEIFFER 10, BREVARD 4
The Tornados got a pair on with two outs in the top of the first, but an outfield assist ended the scoring threat. Pfeiffer kicked the scoring off in the bottom of the second, launching a two-run homer over the left field wall.
Brevard responded with a pair of run in the top of the third as Kacey Shanks and Tyson Hinkle recorded RBI singles. Davis Anders delivered an RBI groundout in the top of the fourth, giving Brevard the lead at 3-2.
Pfeiffer surged for six unanswered runs, beginning with three in the fourth before tacking on a run in the sixth and two in the seventh to take a five-run edge, 8-3. BC added a run via an error in the top of the eighth, but the hosts responded with two insurance runs in the bottom of the frame to close the 10-4 triumph out.
Anders went 3-for-5 in game one with an RBI, while Hinkle, Shanks, and Logan Sawyer each collected two base hits apiece. Pfeiffer surged with five extra-base hits in the victory.
GAME TWO: PFEIFFER 15, BREVARD 7
Three multi-run innings led to the Saturday shootout of game two, where the two sides combined for 22 runs on 25 hits.
Brevard kicked things off with a three-run first, and held a 4-3 lead through four innings as Pfeiffer scored runs in the second, third, and fourth innings.
A pivotal bottom of the fifth saw Pfeiffer score five runs with just two hits and an error, flipping the script of the game in favor of the hosts who took a 8-4 advantage.
The Falcons built on their lead with a run in the sixth and two in the seventh to lead by six, 11-5. The matchup was clinched with Pfeiffer scoring four in the bottom of the eighth to wrap up the dominant eight-run win.
Adam Newcomb, Sawyer, Shanks, and Lucas Woodard all recorded two hits apiece in game two, with Shanks driving in a team-best two runs. Sawyer and Shanks recorded the first two extra-base hits for Brevard of the series as well.
GAME THREE: PFEIFFER 8, BREVARD 5
The narrow series finale began with Brevard striking first, as Hunter Busque drove in Shanks with an RBI single, followed by a passed ball and throwing error that allowed Busque to score. BC loaded the bases up in the top of the third, and a wild pitch brought in the third run of the game for the Tornados.
Pfeiffer put together a pivotal bottom of the third, where the Falcons scored six runs on three hits with three walks and a HBP.
The Falcons shut the Tornados out in the fourth through sixth innings before BC cut into the deficit in the top of the seventh. Woodard drove in Newcomb with an RBI double, cutting the Pfeiffer lead to just two runs, 6-4.
Pfeiffer plated a pair of critical insurance runs in the bottom of the seventh to push its lead back out to four runs, 8-4.
Shanks drove in Newcomb with an RBI single in the top of the ninth, and the Tornados got runners at second and third and the tying run at the plate, but a groundout to second base ended the threat and gave Pfeiffer the series sweep.
BC will look to halt its seven-game slide with a midweek matchup on Wednesday, April 8 at 6 p.m. against Piedmont in Demorest, Georgia.
