Monarchs Walk-Off Tornados in Opener, Take Two on Saturday

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - A thrilling game one of Saturday's USA South Conference doubleheader went Methodist's way as the Brevard College softball team (11-17, 3-7 USA South) fell in walk-off fashion to the Monarchs (8-20, 4-4 USAS), 5-4 in game one. Methodist used that momentum to claim a run-rule victory, 11-3, in six innings in the second contest to sweep the DH.

GAME ONE: METHODIST 5, BREVARD 4

Brevard got the scoring started in the top of the first as Regan Winkler drilled a RBI double to right-center field, scoring Analee Morris. Andrea Furr followed suit with an RBI double of her own, putting BC up by two early.

Methodist responded with two RBI doubles of its own in the bottom of the first, knotting things up. Neither side scored until the bottom of the fourth when Methodist took a one-run lead thanks to a solo home run by Rachel Blanchard to right field.

Trailing by one run entering the top of the seventh, BC put together a stellar rally to take the lead. Alyssa Boris led the frame off with a single, and pinch runner Addison Smith was safe at second after a dropped throw by the shortstop, and was advanced to third base thanks to a sacrifice bunt by Rylee Locklear. Furr's RBI double tied things up at three, and Hayden Moody delivered the go-ahead RBI double that put BC up by one run, 4-3.

A pair of RBI doubles with one out in the bottom of the seventh gave Methodist the walk-off win.

Furr notched two of BC's five doubles in the contest, driving in a pair of runs. Moody also recorded a pair of base knocks for the Tornados. Elizabeth Auciello (5-8) went six and two-thirds in the circle, surrendering five runs on 10 hits with four strikeouts.

GAME TWO: METHODIST 11, BREVARD 3 (6 INNINGS)

Methodist kicked the scoring off with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the first, but BC responded in the top of the second as Smith pushed a single up the middle that brought Peyton Wise in.

The Monarchs scored four in the third to take a four-run lead, 5-1. BC tacked on a run in the top of the fourth thanks to an error, but the Monarchs responded with two in the bottom of the fifth.

Brevard made it a four-run game in the top of the sixth, 7-3, however the Monarchs closed the contest out with four runs in the bottom of the sixth to clinch the 11-3 run-rule win.

Morris, Smith, and Winkler all collected two base hits in the contest to lead the way for the Tornados.

BC is back in action on the road Tuesday, April 7 with a doubleheader at Greensboro beginning at 2 p.m.
