SALEM, Va. - The Brevard College volleyball team (3-6) wrapped up action at the Maroon Classic, falling in a pair of four-set matches to Randolph and St. Mary's (Md.) on Saturday afternoon at the Cregger Center.
BC battled back after a first-set loss, tying the match against Randolph at 1-1 before falling 25-15 and 25-22 to the WildCats. Brevard started hot vs. the Seahawks in the tournament finale with a 26-24 win in the opening set, but then dropped three in a row to fall in the match.
RANDOLPH 3, BREVARD 1 (25-22, 22-25, 25-15, 25-22)
The WildCats opened a 10-4 lead up in the first set, but BC responded with six-straight to tie the stanza up. Randolph answered back, opening a four-point lead, 16-12, and the WildCats did not surrender the lead back, closing the first set with a three-point win.
The Tornados flipped the script in the second set, earning a three-point triumph to tie the match. Randolph cruised to a 10-point set three victory, and a back-and-forth fourth set went the WildCats' way, 25-22.
Rowan Rainey (12 kills), Abigail Kelly (11 kills), and Emma Fontana (10 kills) led Brevard's attack. Izzy Boulay (19 assists) and Madison Warren (16 assists) combined for 35 dimes, and Gianna Borcich (20 digs) and Raney (20 digs) led the defense. Kelly and Raney each notched double-doubles as well.
ST. MARY'S MD 3, BREVARD 1 (24-26, 25-16, 25-13, 25-23)
Raney recorded a team-high nine kills in the tournament finale for the Tornados. Borcich (16 digs) and Boulay (15 assists) were also team-leaders, with Fontana racking up six total blocks.
Brevard opened up with a late five-point lead in the first set, 17-12, but surrendered five points in a row to the Seahawks. St Mary's held a two-point lead late, 22-20, before the Tornados scored four points in a row capped by an Elly McClough kill. The Seahawks were able to tie things back up at 24-all, but Brevard prevailed by two points, 26-24.
The Seahawks answered back with a nine-point set two victory, and surged to a 12-point win in set three. Brevard held a four-point lead late in the fourth, 19-15, but the Seahawks scored 10 of the final 14 points to clinch the match.
BC hits the road next Wednesday, Sept. 16 at 6 p.m. to take on Piedmont in Demorest, Ga. Brevard opens USA South Conference play on Saturday, Sept. 19.
