Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Brevard Outlasts Centre, 2-1

DANVILLE, Ky. - Guilherme Barcelos and Enrique Sosa each found the back of the net, while goalkeeper Soren Deweer turned away 13 shots as the Brevard College men's soccer team (3-1) earned a 2-1 road victory over Centre College (1-2-2) on Sunday afternoon at Amend Field to close out action at the 37th Annual Bob Allen Nissan Classic.

Brevard struck early in the seventh minute when Barcelos finished a scoring opportunity off a feed from Pedro Sena, giving the Tornados a 1-0 lead in the seventh minute of the opening half. The goal was Barcelos' team-leading third score of the season. Sena took the ball on the far side of midfield, and fed a long cross to Barcelos, who put the ball over to his right foot and slotted it into the right-side of goal.

Despite being outshot 10-2 in the first half, Brevard carried the one-goal advantage into the break thanks largely to the play of Deweer, who recorded eight saves before halftime. Centre generated several quality chances throughout the opening 45 minutes, but the Tornado keeper kept the Colonels off the scoreboard.

The Tornados created more offensive pressure in the second half, producing 11 shots after intermission. Brevard doubled its advantage in the 79th minute when Sosa finished a setup from German Garcia for his first goal of the season, extending the lead to 2-0. Garcia whipped a corner-kick cross into the penalty box from the near side, and Sosa finished with his head.

Centre answered just over five minutes later when Tyler Smith converted a penalty kick in the 84th minute, cutting the deficit to 2-1. The Colonels continued to push forward in the closing minutes, but Deweer came up with two more saves down the stretch to preserve the victory.

Centre finished the match with a 17-13 edge in total shots and a 14-6 advantage in shots on goal, but Deweer delivered one of his strongest performances of the season, recording 13 saves while allowing just the lone penalty-kick goal.

Barcelos paced the Brevard attack with six shots and two attempts on frame, while Sosa added the game-winning goal off the bench. Garcia and Sena each recorded assists for the Tornados.

The Tornados host Senior Day on Saturday, Sept. 19 at 3 p.m. at Ives-Lemel Family Field.
