SWANNANOA, N.C. – The Brevard College women's soccer team (3-0-2) used sound defense in the first half and an offensive surge in the second to defeat Warren Wilson (2-2-1) on Thursday evening at the Hank Steinbrecher Sports Complex.
The Tornados and Owls played to a scoreless draw through the first 45 minutes of action before
Kate Floyd broke the stalemate in the 49
th minute. The sophomore forward from Scottsdale, Arizona was played through by
Brennan Howell, and the second-year Tornado finished the chance off for her first goal of 2026.
Brevard finished the contest with a 15-7 advantage in shot attempts, despite being outshot 7-2 in the first half. Floyd led all Tornados with three on-target shots, while
Carissa Jenkins took a pair of attempts as well. Senior goalkeeper
Abby Nunez earned her fourth shutout in five contests this season, totaling six saves in the winning effort.
Audrey Welker fired a seventh-minute attempt that forced the first save of the contest by Owl keeper Nassi Robinson. A foul on the edge of the penalty box led to WWC's first two attempts of the game, but the free kick was blocked by BC's defense and the follow-up was no trouble for Nunez.
WWC won the first corner kick of the match in the 21
st minute, and earned another opportunity after being denied by the Tornado defense. The second corner was also dealt with by Brevard. The Owls got looks at goal in the 23
rd and 24
th minutes, but the shots were denied by Nunez.
Nunez continued to round up saves throughout the first half, totaling six saves through the first 45 minutes. BC was outshot by five through the first period by the Owls, with Brevard's shots coming from
Peyton Coggins and Welker. Six of WWC's seven first-half attempts were taken by midfielder Patricia Leiva.
The Tornados wasted no time in the second half, as Brevard won possession in its attacking half, and
Brennan Howell delivered a perfect through ball to
Kate Floyd, who finished the score off in the 49
th minute as BC held the lead, 1-0.
BC kept the pressure applied, as
Mikayla Rubin fired an on-target attempt in the 53
rd minute of action. Floyd and
Lindsey Jones each followed suit in the 54
th minute, forcing more Robinson saves. The Tornados kept its attack-centered mindset through the second half, tallying a 13-0 shot advantage in the period en route to the victory.
Thursday's lineup featured some fresh faces for the Tornados, as six starters earned their first collegiate start –
Amberlyn Hernandez,
Mary Higgins,
Lindsey Jones,
Emily Quest,
Georgia Sangster, and Welker – while three Tornados were making their first start of 2026 –
Emma Murray,
Julia Needelman, and
Kaylin Prestosh.
Marisa Watts and
Blake Wolczyk made their collegiate debuts as substitutes in the first half, while
Mimi Petrou came on for her Tornado debut.
BC stretches its unbeaten streak in regular season matches to 41, dating back to Oct. 14, 2023. Brevard has not dropped a road match in the regular season since that same date, a streak of 21 contests.
The Tornados open USA South Conference play on the road Saturday at 12 p.m. as BC travels to Staunton, Virginia to face Mary Baldwin.
