DEMOREST, Ga. - The Brevard College women's soccer team (1-0) secured a one-goal triumph over Piedmont (0-1) Tuesday night at the Walker Athletic Complex.
The victory marked the first collegiate win for Head Coach Juan Mascaro Jr., who was elevated to the position in the Spring.
Janie Steele put Brevard's first goal of the new year into the back of the net off an assist by Mikayla Rubin, while Abby Nunez made four crucial saves and the Tornado defense shut down Piedmont for all 90 minutes.
Catie Barton took a pair of shot attempts inside the first 10 minutes of play ahead of two attempts by Kate Floyd and Carissa Jenkins. Rubin took BC's first shot-on-goal of the season at the 22-minute mark, forcing a Kendyl Lloyd save. Floyd managed an on-target opportunity in the 26th minute, while Nunez stopped her first shots of the contest at the 24th minute and the 35th minute.
In the 38th minute, Brevard maintained possession deep inside Piedmont's defensive half, withstanding the Lions' defensive pressure. Rubin dodged defenders in the middle of the box, and played the ball out on the left side to Steele, who fired her attempt into the lower-right side of the net to break the stalemate.
Brevard held on to its one-goal lead through the entirety of the second half, as Nunez's saves in the 70th and 81st minutes kept the Lions off the scoreboard.
With the victory, BC women's soccer extends its unbeaten stretch in regular season matches to 37 matches, dating back to Oct. 14, 2023.
Brevard returns to the pitch on Wednesday, Sept. 9 for a 6 p.m. kickoff at Oglethorpe in Atlanta.
