Tornados Dismantle Quakers, 59-0

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Brevard College football team (3-0) got off to a hot start on Saturday night vs. Guilford (1-2) and did not let off the gas, defeating the Quakers 59-0 on the road to cap off non-conference play.

Brevard's 59 points scored mark its most in a single game since BC scored 63 points at Greensboro College on Sept. 16, 2017, and the 59-point margin of victory is the widest of the NCAA DIII era, and the largest since a 66-point drubbing of College of Faith on Nov. 15, 2014. Saturday's margin is the second-largest for the Tornados against an NCAA opponent as well (Southern Virginia, 62-point victory, Sept. 25, 2010).

The Tornados started the day with great field position at their own 49-yard line and made quick work of a short field, as Christian Conley found Zion Fauntleroy-McDaniel for 26 yards to set up Brevard at Guilford's 21. The Tornados capped off the drive two plays later, as Messiah Ramseur trotted 18 yards into the end zone to make it 7-0.

Guilford's opening drive lasted just over two minutes before Brevard earned advantageous field position at its own 48. Brevard used just four plays to get back into the end zone as Fauntleroy-McDaniel raced 21 yards to extend BC's early lead to 14-0.

The Quakers found more success on their second drive, driving into Tornado territory to Brevard's 30-yard line. However, the Brevard defense stood tall on fourth down as DJ Stevenson wrangled Guilford's Shane Shapiro to stop the Quakers, keeping the 14-0 lead intact.

Both teams traded scoreless drives before a productive punt return from Gavin Pegram set up the Brevard offense near midfield again at the Tornados' 44-yard line. Brevard would get across midfield before Conley found Mason Miles from 43 yards out, as the sophomore hauled in his first career touchdown catch to extend Brevard's lead to 21-0 with 8:12 to go in the second quarter.

Brevard's defense came up big on Guilford's next drive as Abdulmalik Sholane got home to Guilford's Tristan Gabriels, forcing a fumble recovered by the Tornados' Demetrice Martin, setting BC up at Guilford's 26-yard line. The Tornados made quick work, scoring on the following play as Conley found Miles for the second time, this time for a 26-yard touchdown to grow the Brevard lead to 28-0 with 7:16 to play before half.

The Tornado defense created havoc again on the opening play of Guilford's next drive as Isaiah Brown jumped on the football at Guilford's 26. A 15-yard facemask penalty set Brevard up at Guilford's 1-yard line, and Conley plunged into the end zone on the ensuing play for Brevard's third touchdown in just over a minute of game time, taking a 35-0 lead.

Both sides would trade stops before halftime, as Will Hadden III and James Laycock combined to stop Guilford short on a 4th-and-1 before Guilford's Dwight Drew Jr. intercepted Conley on the following drive, sending it to half with Brevard leading 35-0.

Guilford had the ball to start the second half and put together a solid drive before Stevenson notched his third interception in as many games, picking off Guilford's Tristan Gabriels and returning it 88 yards to the house, extending the lead to 42-0 with 11:05 left in the third quarter.

Brevard's defense continued to dominate, as Gabriels was intercepted again on the second play of Guilford's next drive, this time by Sylas Scruggs, who set up the BC offense at the Quakers' 34-yard line. Brevard would use seven plays to find paydirt, capped off by a 15-yard scamper for Fauntleroy-McDaniel, scoring Brevard's seventh touchdown of the day, making it 49-0 with 7:05 to play in the third quarter.

The action slowed to a halt for the next six minutes of play, before the Tornados crafted an eight-play, 66-yard drive, finished off by a four-yard touchdown pass from Chase Patalano to Jordan Barnett to grow the lead to 56. Brevard would score one more time in the fourth quarter on a Spencer Crum 25-yard field goal, ending a dominant effort for the Tornados.

Brevard outgained Guilford 486-173, with 298 of those yards coming on the ground. Seven different Tornados carried the football, led by freshman Marvin Reed Jr., with 11 carries for 73 yards. Favian Williford toted it nine times for 63 yards, and Fauntleroy-McDaniel found the end zone twice, totaling nine carries for 60 yards.

Conley threw the ball just 13 times in Saturday's contest, but was effective, completing six passes for 137 yards and two touchdowns. Patalano completed all four of his passes for 51 yards and a touchdown. Miles led the receiver room with two catches for 69 yards, both of which went for touchdowns.

Defensively, Brevard was smothering, forcing four Guilford turnovers with two interceptions and two fumble recoveries. The Tornados also got to the quarterback, tallying three sacks. Will Hadden III led Brevard in tackles with eight, while Antonio Simpson and Deshon Hadden logged five apiece.

Brevard returns home next weekend to open conference play against Belhaven at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 3 at Ives-Lemel Family Field.
