BEREA, Ky. - The Brevard College volleyball team competed in three road matches on Friday and Saturday at the Berea College Mountaineer Invitational inside the Seabury Center in Berea, Kentucky.
The Tornados dropped a 3-1 decision to the hosts on Friday evening before a pair of setbacks on Saturday to Spalding and Maryville.
BEREA 3, BREVARD 1 (25-20, 25-17, 24-26, 25-20)
The Mountaineers claimed the first two sets, but Brevard battled back in a thrilling third set to trim the deficit to a 2-1 margin. In the fourth set, the hosts battled back to clinch the match with a five-point victory.
Caroline Moon (12 kills) and Bailey Blackmon (10 kills) paced Brevard's attack, while freshman Elly McClough chipped in seven kills. Izzy Boulay distributed 23 assists out, and Boulay (13 digs) and Moon (11 digs) each recorded double-doubles.
Berea was led by Sydney Makle-Bradle, who totaled 12 kills. Kiera Arzuaga (21 assists) and Brianna Negron Torres (16 assists) facilitated the Mountaineer offense, while Aryanna Erosa led the defense with 16 digs.
SPALDING 3, BREVARD 1 (25-17, 24-26, 25-16, 25-19)
After falling behind in the first Saturday match 1-0 as Spalding claimed an eight-point win in the first set, the Tornados stormed back to take the second set, 26-24. With Spalding on set point at 24-17, the Tornados clawed all the way back, scoring nine points in a row to claim the second-set victory.
Spalding responded, however, claiming set three by nine points before clinching the match with a six-point triumph in the decisive fourth set.
Emma Fontana led the way for BC with seven kills, while Moon and Blackmon notched six apiece. Fontana (six) and McClough (five) combined for 11 total blocks, and Gianna Borcich racked up 15 digs.
MARYVILLE 3, BREVARD 0 (25-18, 25-20, 25-18)
In the final match of the invitational, former conference foe Maryville took down the Tornados in straight sets.
BC held an early edge, 9-4, in set one, but the Scots surged ahead and took a seven-point set win. Maryville led wire-to-wire in set two, and wrapped the match up with a 25-18 victory in the final stanza.
Moon notched a team-best seven kills, while Abigail Kelly served up five aces.
Brevard returns to action on Wednesday, September 9 at 7 p.m. for a rematch with Warren Wilson in Swannanoa, N.C.
