Tornados fall to Trojans on the road

ANDERSON, S.C. - The Brevard College volleyball team fell in four sets to homestanding Anderson on Friday evening at the Abney Center.


The Tornados were led by Fatima Gharachorloo and Rachel Ruble, who finished with 14 and 13 kills, respectively. As a team, Brevard finished with four more kills than the Trojans on the same number of attacks, but accumulated 15 more errors on their way to hitting .090 for the match.


Savannah Cox had a tremendous match for the Tornados, netting seven kills while compiling four blocks, including a pair of solo stuffs. Ruble added three solo blocks on the evening, while setter Erin Barr had 37 assists and tied a career high with 23 digs.


The Tornados looked unstoppable in a 25-22 first-set victory. Brevard accumulated 20 kills, tying its highest mark in a single set since 2013, and hit .310 as a team. Anderson was forced to call a timeout after Brevard raced out to an early 7-1 lead in a spurt that included three Gharachorloo kills. But the Trojans responded with a 6-1 run of their own with both teams battling to wrest control of the set away.


Anderson took its first lead of the set on a Marissa Mitter service ace to move ahead 21-20. Kills from Gharachorloo sandwiched around a Ruble termination forced Anderson's second timeout, and the Trojans were unable to recover.


Anderson responded in the second set, however, evening the match with a 25-19 victory. The Trojans led for most of a set that saw one tie and one lead change. The third set was a back-and-forth affair that the Trojans won by an identical score.


Brevard fought valiantly to extend the match and force a decisive fifth set. The fourth frame saw 11 ties and 10 lead changes. The Trojans seized the momentum with four straight points in response to a Cox kill, taking a 20-17 advantage. Brevard was unable to trim the gap to fewer than three points, falling to the Trojans 25-20.


Anderson was led by Serena Jackson, who tied Gharachorloo for the match lead with 14 kills. Four Trojans ended the match with double-digit digs, led by setter Priscilla Irizarry's 14.


Brevard returns to action tomorrow in a SAC match at Newberry. First serve is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
