BREVARD, N.C. - The Royals of Queens University (1-7, 1-2 SAC) outscored the Brevard College Women's Basketball Team (4-3, 1-3 SAC) by 10 points in the second half to secure a 50-45 victory on Wednesday night.
Senior Madison Lenox (Raleigh, N.C.) had another double-double for her team, as the senior forward scored 11 points and had 11 rebounds on the night. Jade Napier (Rockwood, Tenn.) added nine points to the Tornados total going 2-4 from the field and 5-7 from the free-throw line.
The Royals were led by Sarah Henson who scored a season-high 17 points, while grabbing nine rebounds for Queens. McKell Oliverio recorded 10 points in the contest going 5-10 in the field. Carmen Richardson would be Queens' leading rebounder, pulling down 10 rebounds throughout the game.
Brevard got off to a fast start sinking three straight three-point shots by Lynsey Crisp (Robbinsville, N.C.), Cienna Bryant (Roanoke Va.), and Kelsie Rhyne to give the Tornados a 9-0 lead in the first quarter.
Sarah Henson hit a jumper to put Queens on the board with 4:24 remaining in the first 10 minutes of play.
Lynsey Crisp scored from behind the arc to give Brevard the 12-6 advantage going into the second quarter.
The Royals took the lead in the opening minutes of the second quarter as Sarah Henson made two free-throws. McKell Oliverio scored a layup to put Queens ahead 14-12 with under six minutes remaining in the first half of play.
Cienna Bryant hit a three-pointer to give the lead back to the blue and white. Madison Lenox and Jade Napier scored back-to-back layups giving the Tornados a 19-14 lead going into the second half.
The third quarter had four lead changes throughout the 10 minutes. Queens took the lead at the five-minute mark as Sarah Henson recorded a jumper. Brevard would regain the lead the next possession as Jade Napier drove in for a layup.
Maggie Stewart hit a layup with under two minutes remaining in the quarter to give the Royals a two-point advantage going into the final quarter.
Queens increased its lead to six following another Sarah Henson jumper with six minutes remaining.
Following a Brevard timeout, Madison Lenox would take control, as the senior scored a layup and was fouled by Maggie Stewart. Lenox completed the three-point play and brought the Tornados within four points.
Lenox came away with a steal at the 3:30 mark, which led to two successful foul shots by Jade Napier, putting Brevard within one point of the Royals.
The Tornados reclaimed the lead as Lenox scored a layup and Kelsie Rhyne made a free-throw to give Brevard a 39-37 advantage with two minutes remaining in the game.
However, the Royals hit a three-point shot by Mendy McNeese, to take the lead. Queens went a perfect 8-8 from the foul line in the final minute and a half of play to secure its first win of the season.
Brevard will return to Boshamer Gymnasium on Saturday, Dec. 10, as they host Coker College beginning at 2 p.m.
