BREVARD, N.C. - The Brevard College volleyball team (8-11, 5-7 USA South) fell in straight sets (25-22, 25-21, 25-20) to Salem College (15-8, 7-6 USAS) on Tuesday evening at the Boshamer Gymnasium.
Junior outside hitter Ashley Hoxit led all players with a 15-kill performance while adding nine digs defensively. Makenna Parkins added eight kills, while Kaitlyn Pressley posted six kills and a team-high 16 assists. Senior defensive specialist Bailey Lance totaled 24 digs and a pair of service aces, while Caitlin Hagarty added seven digs. Logan Priddy dished out 15 assists as well.
Salem's Valeria Rosa Lopez had team-best marks in kills (14) and digs (19), while Aspen Bradley controlled the net with four solo blocks. Ashlyn Wood logged 23 assists and Macy Nelson registered 12 digs.
The visitors opened up the early lead 7-3 in the first set before BC bounced back to tie things up, 10-10. Salem used a late run to extend out a seven-point lead, 22-15, before the Tornados put together two three-point stretches consecutively to cut the deficit to a two-point margin, 24-22. Rosa Lopez ended the first set with a kill to take a three-point set victory for the Spirits.
Brevard started out hot in set number two, taking the early 10-7 advantage. BC pushed its lead out to five points, 14-9, before the Spirits fought back, eventually leveling the score at 16-16 and taking the lead, beating the Tornados to the 20-point mark 20-17. Late kills from Parkins and Pressley helped cut the deficit down to three points, 24-21, but Salem again finished off the set with a kill to take a commanding 2-0 match lead.
Salem held the edge in the early stages of the third set, taking a four-point lead 18-14. Brevard however would not back down, as the Tornados rallied with a five-point stretch to take their first lead of the third frame, 19-18. Salem answered right back with a 5-0 run of its own and eventually earned a five-point set win, 25-20, to wrap up the road sweep.
BC is back at home for Senior Day this Saturday at 2 p.m. against Meredith College.
