BREVARD, N.C. - The Brevard College men's soccer team (5-7-2, 3-2-1 USAS) fell 2-1 to Methodist (9-3-2, 5-1-0) on Saturday afternoon for Senior Day at Ives-Lemel Family Field.
Â
Eight Brevard College seniors -
Rocco Barbon,
Estevan Berto,
Igor da Silva,
Marcos Silva and
Facundo Sunhary along with reserves players Ryan Devay,
Nathan de Lima and Pietro Moratelli - were honored with a special halftime ceremony.
Â
After a scoreless opening 18 minutes with neither team generating considerable offense, midfielder
Caue dos Santos beautifully set up forward
Daniel Morgan. The sophomore from England delivered by finding the back of the net for the second time this season and the sixth time of his career. The assist for dos Santos was the first of the season and the third in the sophomore's career.
Â
Several close chances for both sides followed for the duration of the first half and into the second half. Each side also had a penalty kick opportunity as well with BC goalkeeper
Matheus Rossi and Trey Gohr of Methodist each making dramatic diving saves.
Â
Despite several strong attacks by the Monarchs, BC's defense held tough, shutting down the visitors for the match's first 80 minutes. MU's Garrett Panos was able to find an equalizer on the 81st minute however. Then less than five minutes later, Casey Atwell scored off a rebound off Rossi to give Methodist the 2-1 advantage.
Â
BC fought valiantly in the final five minutes to create more chances, but was unable to convert as Methodist took the 2-1 victory.
Â
Methodist outshot Brevard 15-9 in the contest and had a significant 12-4 advantage in corner kicks.
Â
Brevard returns to action with non-conference action at local foe Warren Wilson on Tuesday. The regular-season finale is set for Saturday, October 28 when the Tornados travel to Cary, North Carolina to face off against conference rival William Peace.
