Brevard Falls in Five-Setter at Pfeiffer Wednesday

Ashley Hoxit Records Season-High 18 Kills

MISENHEIMER, N.C. - The Brevard College volleyball team (8-14, 5-9 USA South) fell in five sets to Pfeiffer University (9-13, 4-11 USAS) in a back-and-forth matchup on Wednesday evening in Misenheimer, North Carolina.

The Tornados took the first two sets by finals of 27-25 and 25-23, but fell in two-consecutive tight sets 22-25 and 24-26 to send the match to a deciding fifth set. Pfeiffer edged Brevard 15-13 in the final frame to take the 3-2 match win.

Junior outside hitter Ashley Hoxit led the Tornado offense with 18 kills, which was a season-high for the Balsam Grove, North Carolina native. Senior setter/right-side hitter Kaitlyn Pressley added 15 kills and 18 assists for a double-double, while Makenna Parkins also registered a double-double effort with 12 kills and 10 digs. Logan Priddy dished out a team-best 23 assists, while Bailey Lance (17 digs) and Caitlin Hagarty (seven digs) helped anchor BC's defense.

Mattie Hinson (15 kills), Morgan Shrader (13 kills), and Madison Tate (12 kills) all had double-digit kill efforts for the hosts, while Kylee Mayberry facilitated the offense with 28 assists. The Falcons were able to avenge a three-set loss from earlier this season against the Tornados.

The first two sets were highly-competitive featuring 10 ties and three lead changes in set number one, followed by 11 ties and five lead changes in the second stanza. Brevard was able to pull both out to take a commanding 2-0 match lead.

The script was flipped in the third set, however, when Pfeiffer earned a three-point set win followed by a tight two-point victory in set number four, tying the match at two games apiece heading to a deciding fifth frame. The Falcons were able to win the race to eight points in the final set, and held off a late Tornado rally to secure the match victory with a 15-13 set win.

Brevard will return to action this Saturday with a USA South Conference tri-match hosted in Buena Vista, Virginia. The Tornados will take on North Carolina Wesleyan in neutral-site play at 12 p.m., followed by a meeting with host Southern Virginia slated for a 2 p.m. start.
