BUENA VISTA, Va. – The Brevard College volleyball team (9-15, 6-10 USA South) split a pair of contests at a USA South Conference Tri-Match held Saturday in Buena Vista, Virginia. The Tornados defeated N.C. Wesleyan (7-20, 4-12 USAS) in straight sets before dropping a match to host Southern Virginia (13-15, 9-6 USAS).
Brevard 3, N.C Wesleyan 0 (25-22, 25-22, 25-19)
The Tornados opened the day with a straight-set win over N.C. Wesleyan in neutral-site competition.
Senior
Kaitlyn Pressley recorded a triple-double, compiling 14 assists, 12 digs and 11 kills over the three sets. Senior
Makenna Parkins led all players with 21 digs to go along with 10 kills. Junior
Ashley Hoxit also reached double-digits with 10 kills, while setter
Logan Priddy dished out 13 assists.
Defensively, libero
Bailey Lance registered 19 digs. At the net, Parkins earned two blocks to go along with blocks by Priddy and
Kendall Rockstad.
The service game was once again a major strength for Brevard as the team collectively earned nine service aces. Lance, the all-time aces leader for the Tornados, led all players Saturday with four aces. Parkins hit on two aces as well, along with aces by Pressley, Hoxit and freshman
Kylie Katcher.
The first set was tied at 18-18 before BC won six of the next eight points culminating with a Pressley kill off a Priddy assist to create a set-point opportunity. Two points later, a kill by Parkins off a Bailey assist finished off the opening set 25-22 for the Tornados.
Brevard and N.C. Wesleyan battled in a close second set as well as the two teams found themselves toed at 22-22. Three straight points however in crunch-time proved to be the difference as Pressley began the flurry with a kill. A block by the combination of Parking and
Jaxson Tumicki followed to force a set point. With Hoxit serving, NCWU was unable to avoid an attack error to give BC the set win and the 2-0 lead.
The Tornados held a healthy lead throughout most of the third set. Ultimately, a kill by Parkins during Pressley's service proved to be the game-winner as Brevard took the three-set sweep.
Southern Virginia 3, Brevard 0 (25-17, 31-29, 25-12)
In the second match of the day for Brevard, the host Southern Virginia won in three sets despite a thrilling 31-29 second set.
Hoxit led the Brevard attack with 10 kills to go along with seven kills by Pressley. Senior Caitlyn Hagerty and Priddy led BC defensively with 10 kills apiece. Pressley was BC's leading distributor with nine assists.
The Tornados were limited to just one ace, coming off a Hoxit service.
The Knights won the first set 25-17 before the two teams engaged in a marathon second set.
The second stanza, which featured 14 tied scores and four lead changes, saw Brevard fend off several different set-point opportunities. SVU outlasted the Tornados ultimately, taking the 31-29 win.
Riding the momentum from the second set, the Knight ran off a 9-2 lead to start the third set and cruised to a 25-12 set victory and the straight-set win.
Brevard returns to action with a visit to Greensboro on Tuesday evening at 6 p.m. before returning home for the regular-season finale, 6 p.m. on Friday vs. William Peace at the Boshamer Gymnasium.
