Tornados Win 4-0 at Salem to Remain Undefeated in Conference

Brevard Uses Four First-Half Goals to Extend Unbeaten Streak to Seven Matches

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The Brevard College women's soccer team (6-2-2, 2-0-2 USA South) defeated host Salem College (2-5-2, 0-3-0) 4-0 on Tuesday evening at Varsity Field in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.

With the win, the Tornados remained undefeated in conference play with their sixth shutout on the season.  It also marked the second consecutive shutout for Brevard, which has not allowed a goal in 250 minutes dating back to a 1-1 tie at Greensboro on September 27.

In the win vs. Salem, four different Tornados found the back of the net as seniors Abby Mayer, Grace Black and Channing Barker, along with freshman Hilary Schmitz, all scored in the contest.

Just one minute and 54 seconds into the match, Mayer scored her first goal of the season and the 12th of her career as a Tornado to give BC an early advantage off a quick strike.  Nine minutes later, Black scored her team-high sixth goal of the season to propel the Tornados to a 2-0 advantage.

Brevard added to its lead with the first collegiate goal in the career of Hilary Schmitz, a freshman forward from Charlotte, North Carolina.  The goal by Schmitz came in the 33rd minute, giving BC a 3-0 lead.

With just 90 seconds remaining in the first half, Barker then found the back of the net for the fourth goal of the evening.  It marked the first goal in the 43-match career of Barker, a senior defender from Dunlap, Tennessee.

The Tornado offense fired off a whopping total of 45 shots as 16 players recorded shot attempts.  Junior Rachael Trifoli led the way with nine shots, followed by six shots from freshman Camdyn Pacheco.

Sophomore Nicole Arroyo started and played the first 75 minutes of the shutout, registering two saves.  Sophomore Mackenzie Lozano played the final 15 minutes in goal to combine with Arroyo for the shutout.

The BC defense held Salem to a mere eight shots, with just three shots coming in the scoreless second half.

Brevard will return to action on Saturday with a conference road trip to Southern Virginia.  Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. in Buena Vista, Virginia.
