BUENA VISTA, Va. – The Brevard College women's soccer team (6-3-2, 2-1-2 USA South) dropped a road affair 1-0 at first place Southern Virginia University (6-4-1, 5-0-0 USAS) on Saturday afternoon at Knight Stadium in Buena Vista, Virginia. The defeat marked the first loss in conference play for the Tornados who had started unbeaten in their first four USA South Conference games.
In a defensive standoff between the two teams, the match remained scoreless for the first 61 minutes until a goal by SVU's Tessa Miller broke the stalemate. The Knights then held on for the match's final 29 minutes to earn the win.
Brevard fired off six shots in the contest with three shot attempts in each half. Midfielder
Kiara Porcelli led the team with two shots, while
Tae Brown,
Mikayla Zvekan and
Taylor Richardson each registered shots as well. Goalkeeper
Abby Nunez took one shot on goal on a free kick as well.
Nunez played all 90 minutes in front of the net for the Tornados, registering two saves. Southern Virginia goalkeeper Katrina Gardner registered the shutout with three saves.
In total, Southern Virginia outshot the Tornados 10-6 to go along with a 4-0 advantage in corner kicks.
Brevard returns to action with a home USA South Conference match vs. Pfeiffer on Wednesday at 6 p.m. at Ives-Lemel Family Field.
