Tornados Take Five-Set Thriller at The Bosh

Back-and-Forth Contest Goes Brevard's Way with 15-9 Fifth-Set Victory

BREVARD, N.C. - The Brevard College volleyball team (6-8, 4-4 USA South) pulled out a five-set victory over Greensboro College (9-8, 6-2 USAS) in a thrilling, back-and-forth matchup on Tuesday evening at the Boshamer Gymnasium.

The win marked Brevard's first in program history over Greensboro in five total tries. The win also marked BC's second five-set win of the 2023 season. Greensboro came into play on Tuesday sitting atop the USA South Conference volleyball standings.

Both sides traded 25-20 wins in the first and second sets before Brevard took a pivotal third set, 26-24. Greensboro answered back with a nine-point win in the fourth set, 25-16 to set up a winner-take-all scenario in the fifth and final set. Brevard would score seven unanswered points in the final frame to take the set 15-9 and wrap up the USA South victory.

Senior outside hitter Makenna Parkins led all Tornados with a season-high 20 kills to go alongside nine digs on the defensive side. Kaitlyn Pressley notched the ninth triple-double of her collegiate career with 11 kills, 23 assists, and 11 digs. Ashley Hoxit added 10 kills and nine digs, while Blair Nance (eight kills) and Melanie Hoyle (five kills) also contributed to Brevard's offensive attack.

Junior setter Logan Priddy dished out a team-high 26 assists with nine digs and four service aces. Senior libero Bailey Lance totaled a season-high 34 digs and also added four service aces.

Greensboro was led by Payton Shiflet who totaled 26 kills. Jaylyn Templeton distributed 56 assists to facilitate the Pride offense, and libero Morgan Mayfield added 23 digs.

With the match tied 1-1, the two sides engaged in a highly competitive third set that included a pair of ties and lead changes. Brevard opened up a 12-4 lead and led by as many as five late, 23-18, but the Pride marched back scoring the next six points to take the Tornados to set point, 24-23. Parkins notched a kill to tie things back up, and consecutive Greensboro attack errors gave Brevard the set victory, 26-24.

Greensboro was able to lead wire-to-wire in the fourth frame to tie the match back up at two sets apiece, setting up the fifth and final set.

The two sides went back and forth with five ties and four lead changes, and Greensboro held a 9-8 edge late. However, the Tornados would not be denied, and with senior Caitlin Hagarty up to serve, the Raleigh, North Carolina defensive specialist delivered with three service aces down the stretched coupled with three GC attack errors and a Pressley kill as Brevard claimed the 15-9 set win to clinch the 3-2 match victory.

The Tornados will return to action on Saturday at 11 a.m. when Brevard faces William Peace University in Raleigh, North Carolina.
