BREVARD, N.C. - For the second-consecutive season, the Brevard College men's soccer team (6-8-3) advanced on a penalty-kick shootout in the first round of the USA South Conference Men's Soccer Tournament, as the Tornados bested Pfeiffer University (7-6-3) 5-3 in the shootout following a 2-2 draw in regulation and the overtime periods.
The Tornados, who are the four-seed in the tournament, now gear up to travel to top-seeded Methodist University in Fayetteville, North Carolina on Thursday.
BC's NCAA-era program leader in goals scored
Ryan Lynch took and made the first penalty kick of the shootout before
Matheus Rossi saved a crucial attempt from Pfeiffer's Mateo Lata.
Rodrigo Garcia,
Daniel Morgan, and
Marcos Silva all followed suit for the Tornados, who held a 4-3 edge with one more penalty taker left. Sophomore midfielder
Caue dos Santos stepped up to take the attempt, and he drilled it to send the Tornados to the semifinals, where pandemonium set in at Ives-Lemel Family Field as BC's title defense rolled on.
The two sides competed for 110 minutes before the fateful penalty kick shootout, playing to a 2-2 draw. Lynch found the back of the net once while also assisting on a corner kick, while
Adan Miller finished off Lynch's corner for the Peterborough, New Hampshire junior defender's first collegiate goal. Sophomore
Daniel Morgan distributed an assist out on Lynch's score.
Pfeiffer's Benjamin Lamdaverde and Wnd Alex Michael totaled Falcon goals, while Andry Rosales and Nico Soriano dished out assists. BC's keeper
Matheus Rossi made a pair of stops for the Tornados, while PU's Ali Jaafar stopped eight Brevard shots to keep the score level.
The Falcons broke through first in the 27th minute of action as a cross was executed to perfection to give the visitors the early edge. The Tornados answered back in the 40th minute however, when Miller put away Lynch's cross and the match went into halftime all square.
Things remained tight until the 78th minute when Lynch found his way onto the scoresheet as Morgan picked him out with a cross and the senior forward controlled the ball and fired a goal. However, the Falcons found their answer in the 82nd minute on a long ball played over the Tornado defense and finished off.
Two 10-minute OT periods ensued, with a winner undecided before the shootout.
Brevard held a commanding 22-10 shot advantage, with a 13-5 lead after the first half over the Falcons in the shooting department. BC was able to take eight corner kicks as well in the match.
