BREVARD, N.C. - The Brevard College men's soccer team (4-4-2, 2-0-1 USA South) scored five goals in the first half and shut out Mary Baldwin University (0-11, 0-2 USAS) throughout the match to take a 5-0 win in USA South Conference action on Sunday afternoon at Ives-Lemel Family Field.
Ryan Lynch notched just the fifth hat trick in BC's NCAA era and the second of his storied Tornado career, as the Charlotte, North Carolina senior forward found the back of the net three times to bring his season total to 10 goals and his career mark to 32 goals - with all three scores coming in the first half.
Rocco Barbon scored a goal and dished out an assist as the junior defender played up top for the Tornados on Sunday.
Francisco Nogueira scored the first goal of his collegiate career as well, while six different Tornados logged assists in the game (Barbon,
Igor da Silva,
Tom Dussauge,
Daniel Morgan,
Sam O'Callaghan, and
Lamont Young Jr.). Additionally, a total of 33 Tornados made appearances in Sunday's match, including all five rostered goalkeepers -
Filip Barnekow,
Samuel Izquierdo,
Thiago Leopardi,
Tobias Pullen, and
Matheus Rossi - who combined for Brevard's second shutout of the season.
The Tornados wasted no time getting on the board as a hall was played into the box. O'Callaghan directed a header pass that was bounced off a Fighting Squirrel defender's head and Lynch finished the scoring chance off with a header goal - his eighth of the season and 30th of his illustrious collegiate career - to give Brevard the early 1-0 edge in the eighth minute of action.
Brevard doubled its advantage in the 25th minute when Barbon dispossessed a Fighting Squirrel defender and fed Lynch the ball, as the senior put the ball away to make it a 2-0 contest.
Just two and a half minutes later, BC extended its advantage even further when Dussauge played a pass to da Silva, who immediately found Barbon with a through pass and the junior defender-turned-forward beat a defender with a touch and scored.
Lynch finished his first-half hat trick off in the 35th minute when Morgan found him with a perfectly-executed pass that Lynch one-timed into the right side of goal. Noguiera scored his first collegiate goal in the 39th minute of action on Young Jr's assist as Brevard dominated Mary Baldwin heading into halftime up 5-0.
Brevard shuffled its lineup frequently throughout the second half as the defense held on to the clean sheet.
As a team, BC outshot MBU 25-7 and 11-2 on-goal. Mary Baldwin made six saves in the match.
Brevard will briefly take a step out of conference play to take on Johnson & Wales Charlotte on Wednesday, October 11 at 6 p.m. in Charlotte, North Carolina.
