Tornados Pull Away in Conference Opener, 67-53

Tornados Force 28 Turnovers in USA South Opener

BREVARD, N.C. - Josie Hester (18 points) and Olivia Miller (13 points) both scored in double figures as the Brevard College women's basketball team (2-1, 1-0 USA South) pulled away in the second half, defeating Meredith College (0-2, 0-1 USAS) by a final of 67-53 on Friday night at the Boshamer Gymnasium. 
 
Hester, a junior transfer from Cornelius, North Carolina, totaled a season-best 18 points on 8-of-14 from the field with two made 3-pointers, while adding four assists and three boards. Olivia Miller added 13 points with three made 3-pointers and posted six boards while blocking a career-high five blocks. Senior guard Chyna Pouncey led the Tornados on the boards with 11 rebounds. 
 
Piper Carriere scored 10 points to lead the Avenging Angels, and Skyler Wade scored eight points with seven rebounds. 
 
Brevard's defense was the catalyst in the victory, as the Tornados totaled 14 steals, forced 28 Meredith turnovers, and scored 27 points-off-turnovers. BC outscored Meredith 36-20 in the paint, and held the Avenging Angels to 32% shooting from the field. 
 
A low-scoring, tight first half ensued as Brevard held a 14-10 edge in the first quarter, and a close second period resulted in BC holding a 26-21 lead at the break. BC scored 20 points in the third quarter to open up an 11-point edge, 46-35, and capped off the win with a 21-18 edge in the fourth and final period. 
 
The Tornados hit a total of seven 3-pointers in the contest, and out-rebounded Meredith 47-39. Miller logged a career-high five blocks, while Naliyah Boyce also rejected a MC shot attempt. 
 
Brevard will return to action on the front end of a doubleheader on Tuesday, November 21 at 5 p.m. at home vs. Warren Wilson College.
