Tornados Go Toe-to-Toe with D1 Terriers in Spartanburg

Brevard Hangs Right with Wofford in Exhibition to Kick off 2023-24 Campaign

SPARTANBURG, S.C. - In a season-opening exhibition for the Brevard College men's basketball team at NCAA D1 Wofford College (1-0), the Tornados held strong with a late lead in the first half while keeping the contest within single digits for much of the game on Monday evening at the Jerry Richardson Indoor Stadium in Spartanburg, South Carolina.

Incoming graduate transfer Jeremy Posner led all Tornados, scoring 17 points on 6-of-7 shooting with two 3-pointers in just 16 minutes of game action. The Miami, Florida native also led Brevard with four rebounds.

Fellow graduate student Quincy Carter added 10 points with a pair of 3-pointers, and senior guard Carson Evans scored nine points. Sophomore forward Jadon Carnes posted seven points and a team-high four assists.

Wofford was led by Corey Tripp, who paced five double-digit Terrier scorers with 19 points on 8-of-12 shooting. Dillon Bailey, Chase Cormier, Kyler Filewich, and Jeremy Lorenz all scored 12 points, with Lorenz recording a double-double with 10 rebounds.

The Tornados came out of the gates shooting well, going 15-of-30 (50%) from the field with six made 3-pointers in the first half. Wofford answered by shooting at a 63% clip (17-of-27) in the second half to pull away. The game featured six ties and five lead changes in the first half of action, with BC holding a game-high five-point lead midway through the first period after a 5-0 run following a Carter 3-pointer and a Chancey Watson putback bucket.

Brevard kept it tight through the rest of the first half, as Posner pushed the lead back up to five points, 34-29, after five-consecutive points scored for the graduate forward. The Terriers answered by closing the first half on a 13-5 run to carry a slim three-point edge into the intermission, 42-39.

Wofford opened up the second half on a 16-4 run through the first five minutes of action to take a 15-point lead, 58-43. Brevard was able to cut the deficit back down to single digits, getting within seven points at the 12-minute mark, 63-56, before the Terriers ultimately pulled away and claimed the win in their season-opener, 85-68.

The Tornados will compete in another NCAA DI exhibition on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. vs. Winthrop University in Rock Hill, South Carolina, before returning home for the regular season and home opener on Friday at 7 p.m. vs. Montreat College.
