WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Sophomore forward Olivia Miller notched a double-double (16 points, 10 rebounds) and senior forward Makenna Parkins added 15 points as the Brevard College women's basketball team (5-2, 2-1 USA South) surged to a 20-point USA South Conference victory, 66-46, over Salem College (5-1, 1-1 USAS) on Saturday afternoon.
The Tornados handed Salem its first loss of the season after the Spirits started off 5-0 in the young season.
Miller, a second-year Tornado from Hudson, North Carolina, secured the fourth double-double of her career and the second of the season. Parkins added 15 points, while senior guard Chyna Pouncey totaled eight points and seven rebounds. Eleven different Tornados got in the scoring column in the win.
Salem's Dionne Sampson scored a game-best 25 points on eight made field goals, three 3-pointers, and six free throws.
BC dominated the painted area with a 36-12 scoring advantage. The Tornados also scored 22 points-off-turnovers, notched 17 second-chance buckets, and Brevard's bench outscored Salem's 23-3. BC shot 50% from the floor as well.
The Tornados opened up a slim three-point edge in the first period, 16-13, before closing the second quarter on a 9-0 run to take a 10-point advantage into the locker rooms, 29-19.
Brevard surged ahead in the third quarter, scoring a game-high 23 points in the stanza to hold a 52-38 lead heading into the final period of action. BC's defense held Salem to just eight points in the final quarter to wrap up the 20-point win.
The Tornados return to action with a road non-conference matchup on Tuesday, December 5 at 7 p.m. in Greenville, South Carolina at Bob Jones University.
