Women’s Soccer Caps Preseason with 6-0 Exhibition Win

Grace Black Headlines Dominant Performance with Pair of Goals and Assists

BREVARD, N.C. – The Brevard College women's soccer team capped off its preseason with a dominant 6-0 victory over Bluefield University on Tuesday afternoon at Ives-Lemel Family Field.

Senior forward Grace Black led the way with a six-point performance, scoring two goals while also assisting on two more Tornado scores. Sophomore forward Olivia Guillermo found the back of the net and also dished out an assist on a corner, while Kiara Porcelli, Taylor Richardson, and Hilary Schmitz got on the score sheet as well. Starting goalkeeper Nicole Arroyo made the only save needed for Brevard, and also was credited with an assist in the final minute as a long punt found Black, who took a looping shot that beat Bluefield's keeper.

A total of 27 Tornados saw action in Tuesday's exhibition tune up, as Brevard prepares for the beginning of the regular season on Friday on the road.

Brevard dominated most every facet of the game, outshooting the Rams 34-4 (22-1 shots-on-goal). The Tornados were also able to take 13 corner kicks in the contest, while Bluefield made 16 saves.

Black opened the scoring up, taking the ball on the right side of the field in the fourth minute on a breakaway. The Charleston, South Carolina native then cut back to her left to evade a defender and fired a left-footed shot that banked off the left post and into the nylon, giving BC the early 1-0 edge.

Only 14 minutes later, Porcelli scored thanks to a well-placed free kick from Black. Porcelli was able to remain onside as she gathered the ball and tucked it into the back of the net, doubling Brevard's lead.

Richardson capped off the first half of scoring for Brevard in the 22nd minute, as Black crossed the ball to her senior counterpart. The Seminole, Florida native finished the scoring opportunity off as Brevard took a 3-0 lead into the locker rooms.

Freshman forward Schmitz scored for the first time in her Tornado career off Guillermo's corner in the 55th minute, adding to BC's advantage 4-0. Guillermo herself found the back of the net just 10 minutes later off a corner kick that bounced around the box before the sophomore put it away.

Black capped off her impressive individual performance in the final seconds of play, as Arroro launched a deep ball that bounced through the Bluefield defense and found the feet of Black, who proceeded to loop a shot over the keeper to close things out as the Tornados concluded their 6-0 victory.

The regular season opens up for Brevard on Friday, September 1 at Berry College in Mount Berry, Georgia, with action set for 5 p.m. BC then returns home on Sunday, September 3 to take on Carlow University at 7 p.m.
