BEREA, Ky. - The Brevard College men's soccer team (0-1-1) fell by a final of 1-0 to Berea College (1-1-0) in a match of two former USA South foes on Sunday afternoon in Berea, Kentucky.
 
The defeat marked the first time in Brevard's NCAA era that the Tornados had dropped a match to the Mountaineers, as Brevard came into play Sunday an unbeaten 6-0 vs. Berea.
 
Ryan Lynch led all Brevard shot takers with four total shots to his credit, with two of them put on frame. Luis Portillo added a pair of shot attempts, with Rocco Barbon, Caue dos Santos, and Colin McCabe also registering shots.
 
Berea's Joshua Szidik totaled the game's only goal on an assist from Zakaria Shendra. Jean Paul Nunez had a team-high three shot attempts and keeper Eric Acosta made four saves to shut the Tornados out.
 
Three total cautions were handed out to Brevard in the match, including a straight red card issued to da Silva in the 74th minute that caused the Tornados to play man down for the remaining 16 minutes of play.
 
Berea managed to slightly outshoot Brevard 11-9, although the Tornados put four shots on frame to the two from the Mountaineers. The Tornados doubled Berea in corner kicks (6-3) and drew 13 total Mountaineer fouls despite not coming away with a score.
 
Szidik's goal came in the 26th minute of play on a counter attack following a Brevard corner attempt. Brevard took two shot attempts in the remaining 20 minutes of the first stanza, but Berea held firm for a 1-0 halftime lead.
 
Brevard managed to shoot the ball three times before da Silva's ejection, and Lynch put a shot on target in the 80th minute with the Tornados playing down a man, but Berea's defense was up for the task and held BC out of the net to take the hard-fought victory over the Tornados.
 
Brevard returns home to take on Warren Wilson College on Wednesday, September 6 at 7 p.m.
