Tornados Notch First Win of 2023

Ryan Lynch Notches Pair of Goals Including the Game-Winner in 64th Minute

BREVARD, N.C. - The Brevard College men's soccer team (1-1-1) earned its first win of the 2023 season with a 2-1 victory over visiting Warren Wilson (0-2-0) on Wednesday evening at Ives-Lemel Family Field.

 
Senior forward Ryan Lynch, Brevard's all-time leading scorer in the school's NCAA-era, scored both goals to propel the Tornados to the victory.  Lynch played all 90 minutes in the contest and fired off a team-high five shots, including four shots-on-goal. 
 
The match was scoreless for the first 12 minutes, until Lynch intercepted a pass by a Warren Wilson defender then beat two more Owls before firing off a shot that ricocheted off the hands of WWC goalkeeper Kian Godwin and into the back of the net.
 
Brevard continued its strong play throughout the first half, outshooting Warren Wilson 10-3 in the stanza.  However, BC was unable to locate an insurance goal to create any more separation from the visitors.
 
Following intermission, Warren Wilson was able to find an equalizer with a goal by Ryan Kiser off an assist by Will Feehan in the 56th minute. 
 
Tied 1-1, Lynch broke free again to score his second goal of the night, this time off an assist by freshman Santiago Romero.  The go-ahead goal marked the senior's third goal of the season and the school-record 25th of his collegiate career. The assist for Romero gave the exciting freshman from Doral, Florida his first assist and point of his collegiate career.
 
Ahead 2-1, Brevard limited Warren Wilson for the remainder of the match to secure the victory with significant defensive efforts from starters Tom Dussauge, Marcos Silva, Hayden Domingo and Martin Moguel Aguilar.
 
In addition to Lynch's five shots, midfielders Romero (2 shots), Caue dos Santos (3 shots) and Colin McCabe each recorded multiple shots as well.  
 
A total of 22 BC players, including 11 reserves, saw action, showcasing the depth of this year's squad.  Starting goalkeeper Matheus Rossi played 63 minutes with freshman Samuel Izquierdo making his first career appearance and preserving the win with a shutout relief appearance over the final 27 minutes.
 
For the full 90 minutes, Brevard as a team outshot WWC 18-7 with seven shots-on-goal.  BC did not commit an offside violation in the match, yet did record 17 fouls compared to eight fouls by the Owls.  Throughout the contest, the Tornados dominated ball possession.
 
Brevard will return to action on Sunday at 6 p.m. with a non-conference match vs. visiting Carolina University at Ives-Lemel Family Field.
