MISENHEIMER, N.C. - Behind the strength of five double-digit scorers, the Brevard College men's basketball team (6-8, 1-2 USA South) bested Pfeiffer University by a final of 86-84, holding off a late Falcon rally to pick up its first USA South Conference win of the season.
Junior guard
Kavan Horton fell just one point shy of his previous career high, as the Asheville, North Carolina native tallied 18 points on 7-of-8 shooting from the field with a 4-for-5 clip from the free throw line. Horton matched the team lead with six rebounds while also racking up three assists and two steals.
Senior forward
Sly White reached double figures for the second time this season, adding 15 points with a perfect 7-of-7 tally on free throws.
Charlie Hester (13 points),
Quincy Carter (11 points), and
Carson Evans (10 points) rounded out the five Tornados who reached double-digit scoring totals.
Jadon Carnes added eight points, while
RJ Johnson (six points, six rebounds) and
Drew Smith (five points) also registered buckets for Brevard.
Pfeiffer had four scorers in double figures, led by Daymon Beckeitu who scored a game-best 20 points and added five boards. PU's Clayton Robinson distributed a game-high six assists.
Brevard managed a dominant 60% shooting clip from the field (35-of-58), while Pfeiffer used a hot second half to post a 50% mark. Despite only hitting four 3-pointers in the contest, the Tornados used a 60-44 edge on points in the paint to propel itself towards victory in a game that featured four ties and two lead changes throughout.
Pfeiffer was able to hold the early edge before Brevard took over the lead at the 11:07 mark in the first half following a Smith 3-pointer that gave the Tornados a 20-18 edge. Brevard stretched its lead out to nine points late in the first half before Pfeiffer closed the gap to just five points at the intermission, 45-40.
Brevard pushed its lead back up to as many as 11 points through the first 10 minutes of second-half action, but the Falcons used a 9-4 stretch to trim the deficit back down to four points, 69-65, with nine minutes left to go. With the score in favor of the visiting Tornados 81-75 with 3:24 remaining, Pfeiffer was able to score five unanswered points to cut the deficit to just one point with 2:12 left to go. Horton forced a critical Falcon turnover and converted at the other end to stretch the BC lead back up to three points, 83-80, and a pair of Hester free throws with 56 seconds left pushed the lead to a five point margin.
Pfeiffer would not go quietly, however, as the Falcons hit two free throws their own in addition to forcing a Brevard turnover and converting with a layup at the other end, cutting the deficit back down to one point with seven seconds left. Carter nailed his second free throw attempt to stretch the lead back up to two points, and a failed Falcon free throw coupled with an intentional lane violation turnover allowed Brevard to ice the contest and pick up the conference W, 86-84.
BC will be back in action with a pair of conference home games this weekend, beginning on Saturday vs. North Carolina Wesleyan at 2 p.m. and followed by Methodist on Sunday at 2 p.m. Saturday's contest marks Brevard's annual Jameson's Joy Game.
